Job summary

At Atlassian in Sydney, we seek a Senior Software Engineer to own Teamwork Graph externalization, building API foundations and developer tools that power customer applications and AI agents. You’ll work with Product, Design, and other engineers to turn customer needs into scalable backend solutions, primarily in Kotlin and TypeScript.

You will ship APIs, collaborate on MCP/CLI/direct APIs, and mentor teammates while balancing usability, performance, and cost.

Senior Software Engineer, Teamwork Graph Externalization (AGG)

We’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer with strong product instincts and backend engineering experience to build Teamwork Graph externalization products.

The team builds the API foundation that connects Atlassian products and makes Teamwork Graph available to customers, developers, and AI agents. We own the Atlassian GraphQL Gateway and build Teamwork Graph’s external API capabilities across Model Context Protocol (MCP), CLI, and direct APIs, along with the shared metering and monetization capabilities behind them.

In this role, you’ll turn connected work context into products that developers and customers can easily adopt and use. You’ll work closely with Product, Design, and other engineers to understand customer problems, shape solutions, and take them from early prototypes through production launch and iteration.

We’re looking for someone who cares about both the product experience and the systems behind it. You should be comfortable designing intuitive APIs, building reliable backend services, and using customer feedback and production data to decide what to improve next. You’ll work primarily in Kotlin and TypeScript, with some Rust, building the backend services and developer experiences behind Teamwork Graph’s external APIs.

Partner with Product, Design, and engineering peers to shape Teamwork Graph externalization features for developers, customer applications, and AI agents.

Translate customer needs into technical designs, making practical tradeoffs across usability, delivery speed, reliability, security, and cost.

Contribute to the team’s technical direction, identifying opportunities for shared capabilities and consistent experiences across MCP, CLI, and direct APIs.

Execution

Own technical projects from problem definition and design through implementation, launch, and ongoing operation.

Build APIs, developer tools, and backend services that make Teamwork Graph useful in customer applications and agentic workflows.

Design clear API contracts, useful error handling, documentation, and examples that make integration and adoption straightforward.

Build and operate scalable services with strong standards for testing, availability, latency, authorization, and observability.

Use customer feedback, experiments, evaluations, and production metrics to improve product quality and understand adoption and usage.

Work across team boundaries to resolve dependencies, improve shared infrastructure, and deliver features in manageable increments.

People

Mentor engineers through design discussions, code reviews, pairing, and constructive feedback.

Improve the team’s engineering practices, tooling, and documentation so others can build and operate services effectively.

Contribute to a collaborative team environment where people share ideas, challenge assumptions, and take ownership of outcomes.

5+ years of professional software engineering experience building backend applications and services.

Experience shipping customer-facing or developer-facing products, with an understanding of how technical decisions affect usability, adoption, and customer value.

Strong programming skills, with production experience in Kotlin, Java, or TypeScript, and a willingness to work across Kotlin and TypeScript.

Experience designing APIs and building distributed systems, including practical knowledge of databases, cloud infrastructure, and service performance.

Experience owning complex features or projects from technical design through production delivery, including testing, monitoring, and troubleshooting.

Demonstrated product judgment and experience working with Product and Design to clarify requirements, evaluate tradeoffs, and improve solutions using feedback and data.

Ability to work through ambiguity, coordinate with other teams, and communicate technical decisions clearly.

Experience mentoring engineers and improving code quality through thoughtful reviews and engineering practices.

Preferred qualifications

Experience building developer platforms, public APIs, SDKs, CLIs, or third-party integrations.

Experience with MCP, AI agents, tool use, or applications that use enterprise context and retrieval.

Experience with Rust, particularly for CLIs, developer tooling, or performance-sensitive components.

Familiarity with evaluating AI or agentic product quality through offline evaluations, experiments, and production signals.

Experience with GraphQL, API gateways, or multi-tenant SaaS, including authentication, authorization, and API compatibility.

Experience with usage instrumentation, metering, usage-based pricing, or billing.
