Job summary

Trendspek, a platform turning real-world infrastructure into 3D digital twins, is hiring a Senior Backend Engineer in Sydney. You’ll own the engine room of a multi-tenant SaaS built on Laravel, MySQL/Postgres, and cloud containers.

You’ll set coding standards, review, and ship features at scale. You’ll shape API design, data architecture, and security-first implementations, collaborating with offshore engineers and internal teams to push performance and reliability across assets like gas

Responsibilities

• Move legacy server-rendered views to clean, well-tested APIs the frontend team will love building on.
• Shape multi-tenant data architecture and optimise queries at scale.
• Ensure security and privacy by default: auth, PII handling, pen-test fixes.
• Enable safe, repeatable releases with migrations, rollbacks and CI/CD.
• Develop observability to detect issues before customers notice.
• Work on data and API layers powering AI insights and products.
• Provide technical direction and code reviews, including offshore engineers.

That’s what Trendspek does. Its platform turns real-world infrastructure into high-fidelity 3D digital twins, so engineers can inspect, annotate and report on critical assets from anywhere. Customers include Chevron, Woodside and Sydney Water. Off the back of a Series A led by OIF Ventures, Trendspek is now scaling the platform to many more customers and building smarter insights on top of it.

The opportunity

Trendspek is hiring a Senior Backend Engineer to own the engine room of the platform: a multi-tenant, security-sensitive SaaS product built on Laravel, MySQL and Postgres, running on containers in the cloud. You won’t just be closing tickets. You’ll make the architecture calls that take the platform to many more customers, and you’ll set the bar for how backend code gets designed, reviewed and shipped.

• Multi-tenant data architecture and query performance at scale
• Security and privacy built in from the start: auth, PII handling, pen-test fixes

• Observability that catches problems before customers do
• The data and API layers behind Trendspek’s AI insights and assistant products
• Technical direction and code review that raises the game for the whole team, including offshore engineers

You’ll thrive here if you have

• Strong commercial PHP and Laravel experience, or deep experience in a comparable backend framework and a genuine appetite to go all-in on Laravel
• Real database chops: schema design, indexing, query optimisation and migrations that don’t wake anyone up at 2am
• Experience designing and evolving REST APIs for a real product
• Experience with multi-tenant SaaS and the trade-offs that come with it
• A security-first, test-first mindset: you think about failure modes, not just the happy path
• AI tools like Claude Code, Cursor or Copilot as part of your daily workflow, plus a sharp view on where human judgement still has to lead
• The communication and autonomy to drive work and bring people with you
• Deep Postgres knowledge (pgvector or RAG)
• Experience running containerised workloads in the cloud (Docker, AWS), CI/CD and infrastructure as code
• Experience with queues, background jobs and scaling a monolith
• Experience building AI-enabled product features (LLM integration, retrieval, text-to-SQL).
• Working familiarity with Python or frontend skills
• Exposure to compliance-driven environments (ISO 27001 or SOC 2 experience)
• Experience with geospatial or large-file data (point clouds, 3D assets, tilesets)
