Job summary

Australian Payments Plus is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to design and build secure, scalable software powering Australia’s payments infrastructure. You’ll work across the full SDLC, influence tech direction, and champion modern practices, including Agentic-AI tooling to boost productivity and quality.

You will collaborate with Product, Architecture, Security and Operations, mentoring engineers and shaping our engineering trajectory.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of software development experience in Java, TypeScript or C#.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or related field.
• Experience delivering complex software solutions in senior roles.
• Experience building scalable distributed systems and cloud-native apps.
• Deep understanding of secure software practices and OWASP risks.
• Experience using Agentic AI enabled engineering tools for development.
• Strong design skills and ability to trade-off architecture decisions.
• Experience in cross-functional teams with Product, Architecture and QA.

The Role:

As a Senior Software Engineer, you'll design and build secure, scalable and high-performing software that powers Australia's critical payments infrastructure. Working across the full software development lifecycle, you'll solve complex engineering challenges, influence technical direction and collaborate with product, architecture and engineering teams to deliver resilient, customer-focused solutions. You'll also champion modern engineering practices, leveraging Agentic-AI engineering tools to improve productivity, code quality and delivery outcomes.

Key outcomes the role will own

• Design, build and maintain secure, scalable and resilient software solutions that support business and customer outcomes.
• Lead the design and implementation of complex software components, APIs and distributed systems using modern engineering practices.
• Drive technical excellence through clean architecture, secure coding standards, code reviews and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Optimise software delivery through CI/CD, automation, cloud-native technologies and infrastructure-as-code practices.
• Leverage AI-powered development tools to accelerate coding, testing, refactoring and documentation while maintaining high engineering standards.
• Collaborate closely with Product, Architecture, Security and Operations teams to deliver high-quality, production-ready solutions.
• Mentor and support engineers, contributing to a culture of continuous learning, collaboration and engineering excellence.
• Influence technical decisions, evaluate design trade-offs and help shape the future direction of AP+'s engineering capability.

Required experience to be successful in the role:

• 5+ years of experience with software development using one or more modern programming languages, such as Java, TypeScript or C#.
• Bachelor's degree in either Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field. Or equivalent practical experience.
• Demonstrated experience building and delivering complex software solutions in a Senior Software Engineer or similar role.
• Experience building scalable distributed systems, APIs and cloud-native applications using modern software architecture principles.
• Deep understanding of secure software engineering practices, including secure coding, common OWASP security risks, and software quality.
• Experience using Agentic AI enabled engineering tools to perform software development, testing, refactoring and documentation, while maintaining strong engineering discipline and code quality.
• Strong software design capability, with experience evaluating architectural trade-offs and delivering maintainable, high-quality solutions.
• Experience working in cross-functional engineering teams and partnering effectively with Product, Architecture and QA stakeholders.
• Demonstrated ability to mentor junior engineers, conduct code reviews and contribute to engineering standards and best practice.
• Hands-on experience with AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines and Infrastructure-as-Code will be highly regarded.
• Experience within payments, financial services or other highly regulated environments will be highly regarded but is not essential.
