Job summary

All Saints Anglican School Merrimac on the Gold Coast is seeking a Laboratory Technician to coordinate laboratory operations and practical activities for Senior School. You will plan experiment schedules, prepare chemicals, specimens and equipment, and support practicals aligned with curriculum requirements.

You will provide demonstrations and student investigations, ensure WHS compliance, maintain storage and disposal practices, and supervise staff.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate laboratory operations and practical activities, planning experiment schedules and preparing chemicals, specimens and equipment.
  • Provide practical and technical support to teaching staff and students, including demonstrations and investigations.
  • Ensure a safe and compliant lab environment with WHS, risk assessments, SOPs and SDS.
  • Maintain a proactive role in the school WHS committee.
  • Maintain laboratories, equipment and safety systems, monitoring performance and coordinating maintenance.
  • Manage lab resources and purchasing, stock control, ordering, stocktakes and budget monitoring.
  • Supervise and support Laboratory Technician staff, including training and induction for new staff.
  • Contribute to ongoing development of Science operations with Head of Science and leadership.

We are currently inviting applications from a dynamic and passionate Laboratory Technician to join our Senior School.

This is a full-time, term-time position commencing in term 1 2027. The ability to work additional weeks during the school vacation periods is required.

About the role

Coordinate laboratory operations and practical activities, including planning experiment schedules, preparing chemicals, specimens and equipment, and designing, testing and supporting practical experiments in line with curriculum requirements.

Provide practical and technical support to teaching staff and students, including demonstrations, student investigations, fieldwork activities and the use of scientific technologies such as data loggers and digital sensors.

Ensure a safe and compliant laboratory environment, maintaining WHS procedures, risk assessments, SOPs, chemical and poisons registers, Safety Data Sheets and appropriate storage, handling and disposal practices.

Maintain a proactive member within the school WHS committee.

Maintain laboratories, preparation areas, equipment and safety systems to a high standard, including monitoring equipment performance and coordinating maintenance, servicing and repairs.

Manage laboratory resources and purchasing, including stock control, ordering and receiving supplies, annual stocktakes, equipment loans and replacements, and monitoring expenditure against the Science budget.

Supervise and support Laboratory Technician staff, including allocating work, providing practical training and maintaining induction processes for new teaching and technical staff.

Contribute to the ongoing development of Science operations, working collaboratively with the Head of Science and school leadership on laboratory procedures, projects, future requirements and continuous improvement.

About You

Previous experience in a school environment highly regarded.

A working knowledge of chemicals to enable them to recognise incompatibilities, chemical symbols, safe handling and correct storage of chemicals.

Knowledge and experience in understanding the associated work practices relevant to a laboratory.

High level of attention to detail and accuracy essential.

Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively and prioritise tasks to ensure duties are completed in a timely and accurate manner.

Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure, and within a team environment,

Ability to communicate positively and effectively with staff and students and maintain confidentiality where required.
