Job summary

Kolbe Catholic College in Melbourne’s northern suburbs is seeking a Laboratory Technician who is organised, curious, safety-conscious and passionate about supporting engaging science education.

You will prepare materials and stock, assist teachers and LSOs with practical activities, maintain safety procedures and documentation, and help create safe, inspiring learning environments across two campuses, with start date 27 January 2027 and remuneration under Education Support Officer, Category B,

Qualifications

  • Relevant qualifications and experience in laboratory duties with strong safety practices.
  • Current National Criminal Records Check.
  • Current Working with Children Check.
  • Experience with 3D printers is beneficial.
  • Strong planning and organisational skills.
  • Excellent literacy, numeracy, and IT skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work with diverse teams.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure all chemical handling and safety procedures comply with regulations and MSDS.
  • Prepare materials, stock, and standard solutions for Science staff.
  • Set up and test demonstrations/experiments to ensure functionality.
  • Support teachers and LSOs during practical activities.
  • Dispose of biological and chemical residues safely and report issues.
  • Maintain lab documentation: inventories, hazardous substances register, risk assessments.
  • Develop and update the safety manual in consultation with the Learning Leader.
  • Provide support for science subjects/electives for six fifty-minute periods per week; scheduling negotiated with Science Leaders and teachers.
  • Prepare materials for scheduled classes.

Kolbe Catholic College is a co-educational Year 7 to 12 school located across two vibrant campuses in Melbourne’s northern suburbs, St Clare of Assisi Campus in Greenvale and St Catherine of Bologna Campus in Mickleham. Responsibilities:
  • Ensure all actions (preparation of chemicals, experiments etc), including safety procedures, are performed in accordance with hazardous chemical regulations, other relevant regulations and the information outlined in the MSDS and Risk Assessment
  • Prepare the materials, stock and standard solutions, specimens and apparatus as required by the Science staff
  • Assist in the setting up of, and testing of, demonstrations/experiments ensuring they function successfully
  • Assist subject teachers and LSOs with in class support for students with special learning needs when completing practical activities
  • Ensure correct and safe disposal of biological and chemical residues and waste in accordance with regulations reporting issues when they arise
  • Administer first aid treatment for minor laboratory injuries
  • Obtain and keep up to date relevant MSDS, Hazardous Substances Register and Risk Assessments
  • Operate laboratory documentation systems - inventories, the hazardous substances register and risk assessments
  • Develop and maintain the safety manual in consultation with the Learning Leader
  • Provide support in science subjects/electives for the equivalent of six fifty-minute periods per week. Scheduling will be negotiated with the Science Leaders and the subject teachers of these subjects/electives
  • Preparing materials for scheduled classes.
Position:
  • Starting Date: 27 January 2027
  • Remuneration: Education Support Officer, Category B, Level 2
Requirements:
  • Relevant qualifications and experience in laboratory duties, with a strong understanding of safe work practices, ideally within an educational setting.
  • A current National Criminal Records Check
  • A current Working with Children Check Card
  • Being familiar with the use of 3D printers would be extremely beneficial
  • Effective planning and organisational skills
  • Possess a high level of literacy, numeracy and information technology skills
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to liaise and communicate effectively with people at all levels and from varying backgrounds
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team environment
  • Ability to manage multiple deadline and competing demands
  • Presents appropriately, following dress code
