Job summary

Sheldon College is seeking a skilled Laboratory Technician to support the Science Faculty in delivering high-quality practical learning. You will prepare equipment, chemicals, solutions and materials, assist with experiments, maintain equipment and manage safety across the laboratories.

The role focuses on maintaining a safe, compliant lab environment, including chemical handling, risk management and regulatory records, plus equipment/asset management and aquarium maintenance.

Qualifications

• Relevant diploma or higher qualification in Science or a related field.
• Demonstrated experience working with scientific equipment, including assembling, cleaning, maintaining and safely storing laboratory apparatus.
• Strong understanding of workplace health and safety requirements within a Science laboratory environment, particularly the safe storage, handling, preparation and disposal of chemicals and biological materials.

Responsibilities

Job description

We are seeking a skilled and organised Laboratory Technician to join our Science Faculty and support the delivery of engaging, safe and high-quality practical learning experiences for our students.

Working collaboratively with the Head of Faculty – Science and our Science teaching team, you will manage the technical, practical and organisational requirements of the College’s Science laboratories. This includes preparing equipment, chemicals, solutions and materials for practical activities; providing technical support for experiments and demonstrations; maintaining specialist equipment; and supporting staff and students in the safe and effective use of laboratory resources.

A key focus of the role is maintaining a safe and compliant laboratory environment. You will support chemical and hazardous substance management, laboratory safety systems and Standard Operating Procedures, safety audits, risk management and regulatory records. You will also assist with equipment and asset management, laboratory stock and procurement, and the maintenance of laboratory facilities and living specimens, including freshwater and marine aquariums.

This is a term-time position, working 30 hours per week.

About you

• Relevant diploma or higher qualification in Science or a related field.
• Demonstrated experience working with scientific equipment, including assembling, cleaning, maintaining and safely storing laboratory apparatus.
• Strong understanding of workplace health and safety requirements within a Science laboratory environment, particularly the safe storage, handling, preparation and disposal of chemicals and biological materials.
• Ability to prepare chemicals, solutions, equipment and materials for practical Science activities.
• Ability to demonstrate the safe and effective use of specialist scientific equipment to teachers and students.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently with limited supervision while effectively managing and prioritising your workload.
• Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
• Proven organisational skills with the ability to reliably manage multiple tasks and meet agreed deadlines.
• Prior knowledge and experience using RiskAssess and Chemwatch.
• A strong understanding of laboratory techniques; a Chemistry background would be advantageous.
• Current First Aid certificate or willingness to obtain one.
• Current Working with Children Blue Card, or eligibility and willingness to obtain one.
• Demonstrated understanding of child safety, wellbeing and duty of care responsibilities and a commitment to upholding the College’s Child Safety and Wellbeing policies and procedures.
