Job summary

Austal is seeking a Senior Quality Engineer to oversee the Quality Management System's operation, monitor key quality processes, and support continual improvement across non-conformance, audits, documentation, and reporting. The role requires strong quality controls within a regulated manufacturing environment and eligibility for Defence clearance.

Qualifications

• Typically 5+ years experience in quality, compliance and document control within regulated manufacturing environments such as shipbuilding, defence, aerospace, oil and gas or heavy engineering.
• Formal training in quality auditing and documented quality management practice.
• Strong administrative discipline and accuracy.

Responsibilities

• Administer and manage the Non-Conformance Register, ensuring records are complete, assigned to owners and progressed to timely closure.
• Monitor corrective actions, track ageing reports and provide regular updates on overdue quality issues.
• Collate and present closure evidence for verification and support cost of poor quality reporting.
• Collect, analyse and maintain quality KPI data across multiple business units for monthly reporting.
• Prepare and distribute quality scorecards, management review packs and action registers highlighting trends and risks.
• Identify opportunities to simplify quality processes and reduce manual administration.
• Coordinate internal and external audit programs, including scheduling, documentation, logistics, and supporting auditors.
• Track audit findings through to closure and ensure corrective actions are implemented within governance timelines.

Based in Henderson the Senior Quality Engineer will be responsible for overseeing the Quality Management System’s operation and monitor, evaluate and support key quality processes - non-conformance and corrective action register, audit programme, controlled document framework, and the monthly quality reporting pack that reaches senior members of the organisation.

What’s Involved

• Administer and manage the Non-Conformance Register, ensuring records are complete, assigned to the correct owners and progressed through to timely closure
• Monitor corrective actions, track ageing reports and provide regular updates on overdue quality issues while supporting stakeholders to implement effective resolutions
• Collate and present closure evidence for verification, while capturing rework and re-inspection data to support cost of poor-quality reporting
• Collect, analyse and maintain quality KPI data across multiple business units, ensuring accuracy and consistency in monthly reporting
• Prepare and distribute quality scorecards, management review packs and action registers, highlighting trends, risks and performance outcomes
• Identify opportunities to simply quality processes by eliminating duplicate tracking systems and reducing manual administration
• Coordinate internal and external audit programs, including scheduling activities, preparing documentation, organising logistics and supporting auditors throughout the process
• Track audit findings through to closure, ensuring corrective actions are implemented in accordance with agreed timeframes and governance requirements

You’ll Need

• ISO 19001 internal Auditor training
• Certificate IV or Diploma in Quality Auditing, Quality Management, Business Administration or a related discipline
• Strong administrative discipline and accuracy
• Confident with spreadsheets and database or QMS systems
• Able to evaluate quality issues/concerns and propose solutions
• Clear written and verbal communication, and the confidence to chase overdue actions across departments without needing escalation each time
• 5+ years experience in quality, compliance and document control within a regulated manufacturing environment - shipbuilding, defence, aerospace, oil and gas or heavy engineering
• Controlled document management under a formal numbering and revision hierarchy, with contractual retention obligations
• Eligibility for a Defence Security Clearance
