Job summary

Snowy Hydro in New South Wales is seeking a Senior Project Engineer - Mechanical to lead oversight of mechanical construction and installation works, ensuring delivery against Employer’s Requirements and compliance with IFC drawings.

You will champion safety, drive quality and schedule improvements, and provide technical guidance to site engineers across E&M, Civil, Safety and Environmental disciplines. This role is 100% on-site with a FIFO roster, offering diverse benefits and career growth.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering (eligibility for professional membership).
  • Experience on large-scale civil/infrastructure projects, hydropower advantageous.
  • Deep knowledge of construction and mechanical installations; manage multiple interfaces.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee contractor activities to ensure alignment with ER and design intent.
  • Promote safety and lead by example across teams.
  • Review progress, drive schedule/cost improvements and optimise methods.
  • Review complex engineering docs (design, fabrication, commissioning) for fitness-for-purpose and IFC compliance.
  • Build strong relationships with internal teams, consultants, and contractors (Voith, Future Generation JV, subcontractors).
  • Mentor site engineers and technical officers across disciplines.

We are seeking a driven Senior Project Engineer - Mechanical to join the Snowy 2.0 Owners team. In this role, you will be the driving force behind the oversight and assurance of mechanical construction and installation works. Your primary focus will be ensuring that the built product strictly adheres to contractual requirements and that the Contractor delivers against the Employer’s Requirements (ER).

Key Responsibilities
  • Project Oversight & Assurance: Proactively review Contractor activities to prevent legacy issues and ensure the Snowy 2.0 asset performs exactly as designed.
  • Safety & Leadership: Champion the highest standards of health and safety, lead by example and foster a collaborative, supportive workplace.
  • Quality & Optimisation: Monitor works in progress, review daily reports and initiate methodology optimisations to drive schedule and cost improvements.
  • Documentation & Compliance: Review complex engineering documentation (design, fabrication, commissioning), ensuring it is fit-for-purpose and compliant with all project standards and IFC drawings.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Build robust relationships with internal teams, external consultants and contractors (including Voith, Future Generation Joint Venture and their subcontractors).
  • Mentorship: Provide technical guidance and support to Site Engineers and Technical Officers across E&M, Civil, Safety and Environmental disciplines.
About the location

This role will require you to be 100% on-site, working off a 14/7 FIFO roster. Standard FIFO camp‑style arrangements are included. We may also look at a 5/2 arrangement for the right candidate.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will be an adaptable, autonomous professional with a proven track record in heavy infrastructure. You will bring:

  • Qualifications: A Degree in Mechanical Engineering, satisfying the eligibility requirements for Corporate Membership of the Institution of Engineers Australia.
  • Experience: A background working on large‑scale, complex civil engineering or infrastructure projects. (Hydropower experience is extremely advantageous)
  • Technical Expertise: Deep knowledge of construction and Mechanical installations. Experience managing multiple contract interfaces is highly regarded.
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate with stakeholders at all levels, both onsite and remotely.
  • Mindset: A proactive, flexible attitude with the ability to adapt quickly to changing project demands and work independently without supervision.
