Job summary

Snowy Hydro is seeking an Asset Engineer - Mechanical to join our Engineering team in Cooma. You will drive asset lifecycle strategies, maintenance planning, and risk-based assessments to enhance long-term performance of critical assets.

The role offers hybrid work with a minimum of 3 days in office/on-site, plus relocation support to Cooma. You will engage with stakeholders and lead technical investigations across hydro assets.

Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualification in Mechanical Engineering with 3–8 years of industry experience.
  • Experience in hydropower, utilities markets, or heavy industrial sectors.
  • Experience with asset lifecycle management and regulatory maintenance requirements.
  • Ability to balance short-term tasks with longer-term core functions and deliverables.

Responsibilities

  • Accountability for assets such as Gates & Valves, Compressed Air, and Drainage systems.
  • Provide technical leadership on asset lifecycles and troubleshoot defects and investigations.
  • Develop and maintain standards, equipment strategies, and maintenance plans for nominated assets.
  • Conduct health and risk assessments to support data-driven decision-making and lifecycle planning.
  • Contribute to the Management of Change process with governance and technical assurance.
  • Identify reliability improvement opportunities across the fleet.
  • Review and endorse project documentation including purpose statements and commissioning documents.

Snowy Hydro owns and operates a powerful combination of generation assets, including the mighty Snowy Mountains Scheme, gas and diesel plants, and contracted wind and solar energy. We also provide electricity and gas to about 1.5 million retail customers through our retail brands Red Energy and Lumo Energy.

A full-time position exists for an Asset Engineer - Mechanical to join our Engineering team.

In this role, you will contribute to the long-term performance and capability of our assets by providing expert engineering advice and support. You will be responsible for the development of technical and equipment standards, equipment strategies, and maintenance plans, as well as undertaking condition and risk assessments to ensure technical compliance.

This role is based in Cooma, working a standard Monday to Friday roster with hybrid working arrangements that include a minimum of 3 days in an office or on-site. We are pleased to offer relocation support to those looking to make the move to Cooma.

Key Responsibilities
  • Accountability for critical assets such as Gates & Valves, Compressed Air systems, and Drainage systems. Opportunity to expand to other mechanical equipment such as Turbines and Pumps, and develop an understanding across all Hydro Assets.
  • Provide technical leadership and expert engineering advice on asset lifecycles, including troubleshooting defects and investigations.
  • Develop and maintain technical standards, equipment strategies, and maintenance plans for nominated assets.
  • Conduct health and risk assessments to support data-driven decision-making and lifecycle planning.
  • Contribute to the Management of Change process, ensuring strong engineering governance and technical assurance.
  • Identify and facilitate asset reliability improvement opportunities across the fleet.
  • Review and endorse project documentation, including purpose statements, project scopes and commissioning documentation.
About you
  • Tertiary qualification in Mechanical Engineering with 3-8 years relevant industry experience (e.g., hydropower, utilities, or heavy industrial).
  • Strong understanding of reliability engineering in hydropower, utilities markets, and balance of plant
  • Demonstrated experience in risk-based asset management and asset lifecycle frameworks.
  • Strong understanding of regulatory requirements associated with asset management and regulatory maintenance.
  • Ability to balance short-term priorities and break-in work with longer-term core functions and deliverables
  • Proven ability to communicate, influence, and engage effectively with stakeholders, while working both autonomously and collaboratively within diverse geographic landscapes and adapting to changing business demands.
  • Willingness to travel to meet business requirements across the generating assets and build relationships with site-based teams.
