Job summary

CSIRO seeks a senior Power Systems Research Engineer to lead applied research and engineering across modelling, analysis, control and optimisation of power systems in Australia.

You will translate sophisticated modelling into practical tools and solutions for electricity networks, bridging research with industry partner needs, and shaping strategic collaborations across government, industry and academia.

Qualifications

• Relevant tertiary qualifications with substantial research and/or industry experience in Electrical Engineering, with power systems expertise.
• Hands-on industry experience in power system modelling, planning, operations, and control.
• Proficiency in transmission/distribution network simulation using software like PowerFactory and PSS/E.
• Experience with tools such as SINCAL, OpenDSS, PSCAD, MATLAB, Python or Julia.
• Ability to lead multi-disciplinary projects and translate research into industry impact.
• Ability to build relationships and influence outcomes across industry and government.
• Strong publication record or equivalent contributions and mentoring capability.

Responsibilities

• Lead advanced power systems research and engineering across generation, transmission and distribution, using modelling, simulation and data-driven approaches to address current and emerging challenges in Australia’s electricity system.
• Shape and deliver innovative solutions for the energy transition, including renewable energy integration, battery energy storage, distributed energy resources and evolving grid operating and planning requirements.
• Set research direction and priorities within power systems, identifying emerging challenges, technologies and opportunities and translating these into high-impact research programs and funding opportunities.
• Lead complex, multi-disciplinary projects from concept to impact, defining technical strategy and managing delivery.
• Build strategic partnerships and provide trusted technical advice to network service providers, system and market operators, government, universities and start-ups.
• Develop capability and influence the broader power systems community through mentoring researchers and engineers, publishing and presenting research.
