Job summary

City of Mitcham Council in Adelaide's growing suburbs seeks an experienced Senior Planner to join the Development Services team and lead complex assessments. You will assess a broad mix of development applications, provide expert planning advice, and mentor junior staff to ensure robust planning outcomes.

Qualifications

• Tertiary qualification in Urban & Regional Planning or equivalent.
• Proven experience in development assessment and handling complex matters.
• Knowledge of Planning Act, Regulations and Planning and Design Code.
• Strong negotiation, mediation and conflict resolution skills.
• Proficiency with ePlanning DAP and Microsoft Office.

• Prepare assessment reports and present to Council Assessment Panel.

Salary Range - $118,270 - $ 126,021 plus superannuation (depending on skills and experience)

The Role

We are currently seeking applications for an experienced and motivated Senior Planner to join our Development Services team and assist in facilitating excellent planning outcomes in the community.

Reporting to the Team Leader Planning (Assessment Manager), you will assess a broad and interesting mix of development applications, from contemporary infill housing and heritage places, to multi-storey mixed-use buildings, and larger projects that shape our city. It's work that rewards sound judgement and clear reasoning, and you'll be trusted to lead the more complex assessments. You'll provide expert planning advice to applicants, stakeholders and the community, and play a real part in projects that improve our planning processes, systems and customer experience.

Key responsibilities include:

• Assessing development applications and exercising delegated authority where appropriate.
• Preparing assessment reports and presenting matters to the Council Assessment Panel.
• Providing expert advice on the Planning and Design Code and planning legislation.
• Supporting appeals and mediation matters in the Environment, Resources and Development Court.
• Mentoring Planning Officers, Graduate Planners and Development Para Planners.
• Contributing to planning reform, business improvement and customer experience initiatives.
• Developing and improving policies, procedures and guidance materials

About You

To be successful in this role you will have:

• A tertiary qualification in Urban & Regional Planning or an equivalent qualification recognised by the Planning Institute of Australia.
• Significant experience in development assessment and the ability to manage complex planning matters
• Detailed working knowledge of the Planning, Development and Infrastructure Act, the Planning, Development and Infrastructure Regulations, and the Planning and Design Code;
• Demonstrated experience in effective conflict resolution, negotiation, and mediation, with an outcome focus;
• Extensive experience in problem solving using analytical and conceptual skills and the ability to apply a flexible, lateral approach;
• Detailed working knowledge of other legislation relevant to the position, including but not limited to the Local Government Act (1999);
• Experience in delivering a high level of customer service; and
• Proficiency in the use of the State’s ePlanning DAP system and Microsoft Office.
