Job summary

Peabody is seeking a Senior Mining Engineer – Medium Term Planning based in Moranbah, QLD. The role focuses on developing 3 months to 5-year mine plans that support safe and efficient operations, coordinating with operations and technical teams to ensure practical, optimised outputs.

Applicants should hold a Mining Engineering degree with proven medium-term planning experience in open-cut coal, and be proficient in SPRY, Vulcan and Deswik.

Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualification in Mining Engineering.
  • Proven experience in medium term planning within an open cut coal operation.
  • Proficiency using SPRY, Vulcan and Deswik mine planning software.
  • Strong understanding of mine planning principles and operational requirements.

About The Role

We are currently seeking applications for a Senior Mining Engineer – Medium Term Planning to join the Technical Services team at our CMJV operation. Reporting to the Superintendent Technical Services, this role is responsible for the development and delivery of medium term mine plans (3 months to 5 years) that support safe, efficient, and value-driven operations. You will work closely with operations and technical teams to ensure plans are practical, optimised, and aligned with site objectives.

Duties Will Include
  • Develop and maintain medium term mine plans and schedules
  • Produce designs and forecasts aligned with production targets
  • Ensure plans are safe, practical, and executable by operations
  • Monitor plan performance and identify improvement opportunities
  • Integrate geology, drill & blast, and operational inputs into planning outputs
  • Provide technical support and guidance to site stakeholders
  • Utilise SPRY planning software to develop and optimise schedules
  • Utilise Vulcan and Deswik design software to produce pit, dump and rehab designs supporting the medium and long-term plans aligned with operational requirements
  • Mentor and support junior engineers within the team
  • Contribute to budgeting, forecasting, and life-of-mine activities
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives across planning and operations

This position is offered on a 9-day fortnight roster (Monday–Friday, Monday–Thursday) and supports a residential, DIDO, or FIFO lifestyle, depending on candidate preference.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will bring strong technical capability, a proactive mindset, and a focus on delivering practical outcomes. Ideally, you will possess:

  • Tertiary qualification in Mining Engineering
  • Proven experience in medium term planning within an open cut coal operation
  • Demonstrated proficiency using SPRY, Vulcan and Deswik (mine planning software)
  • Strong understanding of mine planning principles and operational requirements including Drill & Blast, Load & Haul and Dragline methodology
  • Ability to analyse data and translate outcomes into actionable plans
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Queensland First Class Mine Manager (or working towards) highly regarded
  • A strong commitment to safety and continuous improvement

Job Description
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Visibly support and champion Peabody’s Missions and Values

  • Short, medium and long term mine planning activities
  • Examine mining methods and equipment to improve performance
  • Prepare drilling and blasting plans
  • Monitor mine ventilation (if applicable) and provide other mine services
  • Supervise mining engineers and other technical staff in their day to day activities
  • Ensure activities comply with safety, environmental and statutory requirements
  • Other duties as assigned by the company
Experience
  • Minimum of 3, preference of 5, years relevant professional experience
Physical Requirements - Surface Environment
  • Must have the ability to stand for up to 4 hours per shift
  • Must have the ability to be seated for up to 4 hours to operate equipment or vehicles
  • Must have the ability to work from elevated positions, walk/climb up and down stairs/steps and climb on/off equipment and ladders
  • Must have the ability to wear required protective footwear, hearing and eye protection, and other personal protective equipment as required by Company and MSHA
  • Must have the ability to perform repetitive hand and wrist motions (push, pull, twist, handle), and have rapid reflex movements of the arms/legs and good hand to eye coordination
  • Must have the ability to lift/raise 10 – 50 lbs. without mechanical assistance frequently during the work shift
  • Must have the ability to work in extreme conditions, including but not limited to changing weather conditions, dust, mud, varying levels of noise from low to high decibels, varying degrees of light/dark, in and around artificial light, and in a confined work area
  • Must have the ability to work various shifts (required shifts include days, evening and nights, with rotating schedules, weekends and holidays)
Physical Requirements - Underground Environment
  • Must have the ability to stand for prolonged periods of time on uneven, rocky surfaces for up to the entire length of the shift
  • Must have the ability to be seated for up to 4 hours to operate equipment or vehicles
  • Must have the ability to walk for up to 4 hours at a time. Will be required to walk through different sections of the mine with varying degrees of clearance and headroom
  • Must have the ability to wear required protective footwear, hearing and eye protection, and other personal protective equipment as required by Company and MSHA
  • Must have the ability to bend or stoop for a full work period as a result of mine height
  • Must have the ability to climb up and down stairs/steps and climb on/off equipment and ladders
  • Must have the ability to perform repetitive hand and wrist motions (push, pull, twist, handle), and have rapid reflex movements of the arms/legs and good hand to eye coordination
  • Must have the ability to lift 25 – 50 lbs. on a frequent basis and the ability to occasionally lift items weighing up to 80 lbs.
  • Must have the ability to work in extreme conditions, including but not limited to changing weather conditions, dust, mud, varying levels of noise from low to high decibels, varying degrees of light/dark, in and around artificial light, and in a confined work area
  • Must have the ability to work various shifts (required shifts include days, evening and nights, with rotating schedules, weekends and holidays)
Physical Requirements - Office
  • Must have the ability to sit for up to 8 hours
  • Must be able to use a computer and communicate effectively in various forms, including email and by phone
  • Must have the ability to review paper and electronic documents and complete computer entry of data from paper documents
  • Must be able to find, remove and return files to/from file cabinets and discuss issues by telephone and in person
  • Must be able to operate copier, fax machine, etc.
