Job summary

Fortescue is seeking a Senior Mine Closure Planner to lead the development and delivery of Mine Closure Plans across the mine life cycle, ensuring WA regulatory compliance and alignment with sustainability goals. The role requires strong collaboration with studies, mine planning, environment, heritage and communities.

You will manage closure-related risks, contribute to land-use strategies, and prepare clear technical documents, cost estimates and procedures while spending occasional site visits.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years' environmental management experience in mining.
  • Experience preparing mine closure plans in line with WA regulations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Cross-functional collaboration and risk management experience.
  • Familiarity with GIS and Vulcan is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Lead development and ongoing improvement of Mine Closure Plans (MCPs) in collaboration with technical and approvals teams, aligning with WA legislation and Fortescue’s internal standards.
  • Integrate closure planning into life-of-mine (LOM) planning by working closely with teams across Studies, Mine Planning, Operations, Environment, Heritage and Communities.
  • Identify closure-related risks and contribute to sustainable post-mining land use by developing and supporting appropriate strategies.
  • Partner with internal teams to plan and carry out trials and initiatives that address closure knowledge gaps, enhance understanding of land and water systems, and refine rehabilitation approaches.
  • Prepare clear, professional documentation for both internal and external stakeholders, including presentations, technical reports, cost estimates, and procedures.

Our Opportunity

Work Location: Fortescue’s Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk people.

Roster: Monday to Friday

We are looking for experienced and motivated professionals in mine closure planning to join our Closure Team as a Senior Mine Closure Planner. This permanent role offers flexible working arrangements on a 5:2 Perth-based roster. We’re pleased to offer flexibility, including part-time opportunities, to support your well-being and a healthy work-life balance.

As a key member of the team, you will take a lead role in planning and coordinating mine closure activities that meet regulatory requirements and support our sustainability and rehabilitation goals.

The role involves developing and maintaining closure plans throughout the mine life cycle, with a strong focus on managing closure-related risks through stakeholder collaboration, research, and preparation for progressive rehabilitation.

Key Responsibilities

Qualifications And Experience
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in environmental management in the mining sector, including the preparation of mine closure plans in line with WA regulations.
  • Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to present ideas and information in a structured, engaging manner.
  • A proactive and collaborative approach, with the ability to work independently while knowing when to seek input and guidance.
  • Experience in project planning, risk management and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Excellent communication skills—both written and verbal—and the ability to work effectively with a range of stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with Pilbara soils, vegetation, and water systems would be an advantage.
  • Experience with GIS and Vulcan software for spatial analysis is desirable.
  • A team-focused mindset and willingness to spend short periods (up to 10 days per year) on site.
  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline.
