Job description

This is not an engineering role where your best ideas sit in a folder waiting for another round of approvals. It is an opportunity to lead a capable mechanical engineering team, solve practical product challenges and see your decisions turn into outcomes for customers.

At Allight, we design and assemble trusted mobile lighting, power generation and industrial solutions used across mining, construction, infrastructure and other critical industries. We combine global product expertise with local support as part of the Seven Group Holdings family.

Reporting to the Engineering & Quality Manager, you will lead the mechanical engineering team and collaborate closely with the electrical team. You will set priorities, coach and mentor your people, strengthen technical discipline and help move product design, improvement and development work from idea to delivery.

The impact you can make:

Bring leadership and engineering judgement together. Improve the products our customers rely on, develop a skilled and motivated team, and create practical momentum across engineering, quality and operations.

THE ROLE
  • Lead the team: Guide the mechanical engineering team day to day, clarify priorities and align work with business, department and project goals.
  • Coach and build capability: Mentor a skilled and motivated team, share knowledge, encourage strong technical thinking and create clear accountability.
  • Deliver core engineering work: Oversee customer order processing, product improvements, new product development, part and product evaluations, and root-cause investigations.
  • Own design integrity: Ensure mechanical designs are compliant and structurally certified, with accurate supporting documentation maintained.
  • Review complex requirements: Assess tenders and engineered-to-order requirements, and confirm compliance with applicable Australian standards.
  • Partner with quality: Support the assessment and resolution of product and component issues using evidence, sound judgement and practical problem-solving.
  • Connect the business: Work closely with engineering, quality, operations and other stakeholders to deliver high-quality outcomes for customers.
  • Improve how work gets done: Identify smarter, simpler and more reliable ways to improve engineering processes, product performance and team effectiveness.
WHO WILL THRIVE HERE?
  • Practical leadership: You set clear expectations, coach in the moment and help capable people do their best work.
  • Customer judgement: You balance technical compliance, product performance and the practical outcome the customer needs.
  • Calm ownership: You take responsibility, make decisions with the available evidence and communicate early when priorities or risks change.
  • Straightforward collaboration: You are direct, respectful and low ego. You build trust across functions rather than working in an engineering silo.
  • Improvement mindset: You look for the root cause, simplify where possible and leave systems, products and people stronger than you found them.
ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE & SKILLS
  • Mechanical engineering qualification: A degree in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent recognised qualification.
  • Senior engineering experience: At least 10 years of relevant engineering experience, with evidence of sound technical judgement and increasing responsibility.
  • People leadership: Experience leading, coaching or mentoring engineers and coordinating team priorities and delivery.
  • Product design: Strong product design experience within a manufacturing or assembly environment.
  • 3D CAD capability: Advanced hands-on experience using 3D CAD and controlled engineering documentation.
  • Project delivery: Strong project management capability, including planning, prioritisation, risk management and follow-through.
  • Compliance and design assurance: Experience reviewing designs and technical requirements for compliance, certification and documented approval.
  • Problem-solving: Demonstrated experience investigating product, component or design issues and driving practical root-cause resolution.
  • Communication: Clear written and verbal communication, with the ability to explain technical matters and engage stakeholders across the business.
  • Work rights: Appropriate working rights for employment in Australia.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE
  • SolidWorks and PDM: Advanced experience with SolidWorks and product data management workflows.
  • Engineered-to-order work: Experience reviewing tenders, interpreting customer requirements and delivering engineered-to-order solutions.
  • Australian standards: Practical experience applying relevant Australian mechanical, structural or product standards.
  • Structural certification: Experience coordinating or supporting structural analysis, certification and associated technical files.
  • New product development: Experience taking products or major improvements through design review, verification, release and implementation.
  • Quality partnership: Experience working with quality teams on product assessment, non-conformance, corrective action or continuous improvement.
  • Industrial products: Exposure to mobile lighting, power generation, engines, mining equipment or other industrial products.
  • Cross-discipline delivery: Experience working closely with electrical engineers, manufacturing, assembly or service teams.
WHAT MAKES THIS OPPORTUNITY DIFFERENT?
  • Lead a capable team: Coach, mentor and guide skilled engineers who are motivated to learn, contribute and deliver.
  • Influence real products: Your decisions will shape product design, improvements, compliance and new product development.
  • Work with practical purpose: Help deliver mobile lighting, power generation and industrial solutions used in demanding environments.
  • Make decisions close to the work: Operate in a supportive environment with straightforward communication and quick decision-making.
  • Grow with the business: Broaden your leadership and technical impact through national projects and industry-leading products.
  • Be recognised: Celebrate great work through Allight's Illuminate recognition program.
  • Keep life practical: Onsite parking is available.
