Job summary

Sibanye Stillwater Australia is seeking a Senior Laboratory Technician for Century Mine. The role requires management of daily laboratory workflow, QA/QC reporting, and mentoring the laboratory team. FIFO one 15 days on/13 days off roster, supporting hydro mining and rehabilitation programs.

Job description

We are looking for an experienced Senior Laboratory Technician to join our team at Century Mine.

This is an opportunity to join a well-established site during an important period of change. Century Mine is approaching the final stages of hydro mining, with mine life currently through 2027, while also preparing for rehabilitation activities and the potential future development of phosphate operations.

The role is Fly-In Fly-Out (FIFO) on a 15 days on / 13 days off roster.

Purpose

Management of the daily laboratory workflow ensuring:

• Analysis of samples to an agreed standard of work in a safe, timely manner
• Reporting of accurate and reproducible results (QAQC criterium achieved)
• Actively manage, support and mentor direct reports

Key Accountabilities

• Assign, coordinate and review tasks for direct reports to manage priority tasks, resource levels and balanced workloads;
• Sample receival, analysis, data entry / reporting, storage and disposal for all geological, metallurgical / plant and environmental samples as per company requirements;
• Preparation and analysis of samples using various measuring and assay apparatus including metallurgical preparation and sizing equipment, crushers, pulverisers, filter presses, XRF, AAS, Eltra carbon / sulphur analysers, ICP and other methods;
• Data collection, review and reporting of results (using CCLAS) including all required QA/QC procedures;
• Calibration, maintenance and cleaning of laboratory equipment and laboratory areas;
• Safe and environmentally compliant management of reagents / chemicals and laboratory wastes;
• Develop, review and follow procedures as outlined in the written safe work instructions (SWIs) / procedures;
• Ensure team members are trained and are competent to complete tasks as outlined in written safe work instructions / procedures;
• Inspection of the work areas to identify hazards and implement controls including completion of documented routine area inspections;
• Actively participate in safety related activities and improvements, including conducting risk assessments and management of change processes;
• Ensure delivery of effective shift handovers with team members;
• Maintain and foster an exceptional work ethic;
• Taking the initiative to continually improve your work, the overall business and promote the goals of the organisation;
• Working effectively and collaboratively with immediate colleagues and others in cross-functional relationships;
• Any other reasonable tasks as requested by Senior Metallurgists, the Technical Advisor or Metallurgy Superintendent.

Applicants Should Possess the Following

Technical Skills

• High level of analytical skills and knowledge;
• Trouble shooting / problem solving / decision making;
• Time management and ability to set priorities;
• Strong computer skills in Excel and Word;
• CCLAS LIMS experience valued

People Skills

• Strong written and verbal communication skills & able to communicate at various levels of the organisation & with external providers;
• Sound conflict resolution skills;
• Team player with the ability to maintain internal and external relationships.
• Ability to work unsupervised / independently.

Knowledge

• Base metals laboratory / general laboratory operations knowledge;
• Experience with sample preparation and correct sampling techniques;
• Knowledge of wet chemistry methods including digestion;
• Experience working in a multi-instrument laboratory including XRF, AAS, carbon analysers;
• Familiar with NATA requirements, applicable Australian Standards and ISO17025 (desirable).

Experience

• At least 3 years of site-based or commercial mineral laboratory experience in a similar role (preferred).
• Experience in FIFO operations and remote site conditions (preferred).

Education, Qualifications, Tickets, Licences

• Current First Aid / CPR Certificate;
• S123 (QMS);
• Cert 3 or 4 or Diploma in Laboratory Skills or relevant Bachelor’s degree (desirable).
