Job summary

Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) in Melbourne is seeking a Senior Internal Auditor to lead risk-based audits and develop effective audit strategies that provide meaningful insights across the organisation.

You will leverage your expertise in internal audit, risk management and data analytics to strengthen controls, influence decision-making, and mentor junior auditors in a dynamic energy sector environment.

Qualifications

• Degree-qualified in Information Technology, Computer Science, Accounting, Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Professional certifications such as CA, CPA, CIA, CISA or CISSP are highly regarded.

Responsibilities

• Lead end-to-end audit engagements, including planning, scoping, testing, reporting, and management action agreements.
• Develop and deliver the Internal Audit Plan by partnering with stakeholders to identify risks and build the audit universe.
• Evaluate design and effectiveness of operational, financial, and IT controls with practical recommendations.
• Leverage data analytics and reporting tools (Power BI, SQL) to identify trends and drive improvement.
• Mentor junior auditors and manage co-sourced audit partners to support the function.

About the role

As a Senior Internal Auditor, you will play a key role in delivering our risk-based audit plan, leading complex audits, and developing effective audit strategies that provide meaningful insights across the organisation.

You will leverage your expertise in internal audit, risk management, and data analytics to identify opportunities for improvement, strengthen controls, and influence business decision-making. Building strong relationships with stakeholders, you will provide trusted advice and assurance while helping the organisation navigate emerging risks and maintain alignment with industry best practice.

What you will be doing

Lead end-to-end audit engagements, including planning, scoping, testing, reporting, and agreement of management actions.

Develop and deliver the Internal Audit Plan by partnering with stakeholders to identify risks, build the audit universe, and provide independent assurance.

Evaluate the design and effectiveness of operational, financial, and IT controls, providing practical recommendations to strengthen governance and risk management.

Leverage data analytics and reporting tools, including GRC platforms, Power BI, and SQL, to identify trends, uncover risks, and drive business improvement.

Build trusted stakeholder relationships, manage co-sourced audit partners, monitor remediation activities, and mentor junior auditors to support a high-performing audit function.

What you will bring to the role

Degree-qualified in Information Technology, Computer Science, Accounting, Engineering, or a related discipline, with professional certifications such as CA, CPA, CIA, CISA or CISSP highly regarded.

Demonstrated experience delivering internal audit, risk, assurance, or compliance engagements, ideally within complex or regulated environments, with energy industry experience considered advantageous.

Strong knowledge of operational and IT audit practices, IT risk management, cybersecurity, project assurance, and governance frameworks.

Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence, build trusted relationships, and present complex information clearly to diverse audiences.

Highly analytical and detail-oriented, with a proactive approach to problem-solving, continuous improvement, and delivering practical, risk-based insights.
