Job summary

CommBank is seeking a Senior SRE Lead in Sydney to drive reliability across our digital banking platforms. You will manage a medium sized engineering team, align goals, develop careers, and foster a strong, codified engineering culture focused on quality and standards.

The role emphasizes implementing SRE practices, designing and refining SLIs/SLOs/SLA, and leading initiatives to enhance observability and performance across critical systems.

Qualifications

• Experience in SRE philosophy, principles and practices – creating/reviewing SLI, SLO and SLA’s.
• Provide effective leadership to engineers and establish mechanisms for peer-to-peer learning and mentoring.
• Show expertise in designing, developing, testing and supporting applications and systems.
• Have leveraged an excellent level of technical domain knowledge relevant to Chapter Area (e.g. Software Engineering).
• Identify technology limitations and deficiencies in existing systems and develop scalable improvements.
• Solid background in system and application performance testing, programming and monitoring network performance.

Responsibilities

• Manage a medium sized team of Engineers ensuring optimal goal setting, performance, career development and engagement.
• Advocate embedding a positive engineering culture, ensuring adherence to standards and technical quality, and guide complex technical problem solving.
• Lead initiatives to improve observability, reliability and performance of critical banking apps.
• Collaborate with product and operations teams to ensure service level objectives are met.
• Mentor engineers and drive peer-to-peer learning and knowledge sharing.

• Have leveraged an excellent level of technical domain knowledge relevant to Chapter Area (e.g. Software Engineering). Empowered teams to manage their work appropriately, responded to queries, addressed impediments and problem solved technical issues.
• Are constantly identifying technology limitations and deficiencies in existing systems and associated processes, procedures and methods, and using software engineering to develop scalable and sustainable improvements
• Have a solid background in system and application performance testing, programming and the ability to monitor, measure and optimise performance and network communication

Skills

We use a broad range of tools, languages, and frameworks. We don’t expect you to know them all but experience or exposure with some of these (or equivalents) will set you up for success in this team;

• CI/CD tools (i.e. Jenkins, BitBucket, TeamCity)
• Databases and networks
• Knowledge of UNIX operating systems internals and / or networking.
