Job summary

SMEC in Newcastle is seeking a Senior Engineer – Roads & Highways to lead design and delivery across a portfolio of transport projects. Based in Newcastle, you will work with multidisciplinary teams to coordinate planning, design and delivery, ensuring integrated transport outcomes for clients.

You will bring 8–12 years of experience in roads infrastructure, strong technical design skills, and proven project management capability.

The Role

As a Senior Engineer – Roads & Highways, you will provide technical expertise and project delivery capability across a diverse portfolio of transport infrastructure projects. Based in Newcastle, you will work alongside multidisciplinary teams to support the planning, design and delivery of road, highway and broader transport infrastructure across New South Wales and Australia. In this role, you’ll combine your roads and highways technical expertise with strong project management capability, taking ownership of design packages and coordinating inputs across multiple disciplines to deliver integrated transport outcomes.

• Deliver road and highway design solutions across various stages of the transport infrastructure lifecycle.
• Undertake geometric design, corridor modelling, design development and technical reviews.
• Manage defined packages of work, including scope, programme, budget, quality and technical deliverables.
• Coordinate across transport disciplines and multidisciplinary teams to achieve integrated project outcomes.
• Prepare and review reports, specifications, design documentation and other technical deliverables.
• Support project planning, resourcing, risk management and commercial performance.
• Engage with clients and stakeholders to understand project requirements and support successful delivery outcomes.
• Mentor and support Graduate and developing Engineers, providing technical guidance and oversight.
• Contribute to business development, proposals and technical excellence initiatives across the Roads & Highways and broader transport business.

About You

You are an experienced Roads & Highways Engineer with a strong understanding of the wider transport infrastructure environment and a passion for delivering practical, integrated design solutions. You enjoy combining technical engineering with project management, multidisciplinary coordination and client engagement, and are comfortable taking ownership of packages of work from planning and design through to delivery. With experience across road and transport infrastructure projects, you thrive in a consulting environment and are motivated by the opportunity to contribute to the continued growth of our Newcastle team and transport capability. You will bring:

• A Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
• 8-12 years' experience delivering roads, highways and transport infrastructure projects.
• Strong experience in road design, geometric design and transport infrastructure delivery.
• Demonstrated project management capability, including management of scope, programme, budget, quality and project deliverables.
• Experience coordinating technical inputs across multidisciplinary transport projects.
• Proficiency with relevant industry software, including 12d, OpenRoads Designer and/or Civil 3D.
• Strong knowledge of relevant Australian Standards, Austroads guidelines and TfNSW design requirements.
• Strong communication, client and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Ability to mentor and provide technical guidance to developing Engineers.
• A strong commitment to safety, quality and commercially responsible project delivery.
• Chartered status, CPEng or NER registration, or active progression towards achieving professional accreditation.
• Preferred: Experience delivering Transport for NSW (TfNSW) projects and familiarity with NSW transport infrastructure design standards, approvals and delivery requirements, alongside experience managing multidisciplinary design packages and project outcomes.
