Job summary

SMEC, a global engineering consultancy, seeks a Senior Drafter to join the Roads & Highways team in Newcastle or Sydney. You will produce high-quality drafting and design documentation for major transport projects, aligning with client standards and SMEC procedures.

You will collaborate with engineers and designers in a digitally enabled environment, delivering buildable outputs and coordinating across disciplines to ensure efficient project delivery.

Qualifications

• 8-12 years of drafting experience in roads, highways or transport projects.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD, Civil 3D or MicroStation.
• Strong drafting standards and QA processes.
• Experience in digital delivery and model coordination.

Responsibilities

• Produce detailed 2D drawings and 3D models for roads and highways infrastructure projects.
• Deliver detailed design and construction-level documentation in line with project requirements.
• Apply SMEC drafting standards, QA processes and client specifications.
• Undertake checking and review of drawings and documentation for quality and accuracy.
• Manage drawing and model outputs across project timelines and milestones.
• Coordinate with engineers, designers and multidisciplinary teams to support integrated design delivery.
• Maintain project data in Common Data Environments such as ProjectWise.
• Provide technical drafting guidance to less experienced team members.
• Contribute to continuous improvement in digital delivery and workflows.

The Role

We're looking for a Senior Drafter to join our Roads & Highways team in either Newcastle or Sydney, supporting the delivery of complex transport infrastructure projects across Australia.

In this role, you will take responsibility for producing high-quality drafting and design documentation, ensuring alignment with SMEC and client standards while contributing to efficient, coordinated project delivery.

You'll work closely with engineers, designers and multidisciplinary project teams in a collaborative, digitally enabled environment, bringing strong technical drafting capability and experience to the delivery of accurate, coordinated and buildable design outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

• Produce detailed 2D drawings and 3D models for roads and highways infrastructure projects
• Deliver detailed design and construction-level documentation in line with project requirements
• Apply SMEC drafting standards, QA processes and client specifications
• Undertake checking and review of drawings and documentation to ensure quality and accuracy
• Manage drawing and model outputs across project timelines and milestones
• Coordinate closely with engineers, designers and multidisciplinary teams to support integrated design delivery
• Maintain and manage project data within Common Data Environments such as ProjectWise or similar
• Provide technical drafting guidance and support to less experienced team members
• Contribute to continuous improvement in digital delivery, drafting standards and workflows

About You

You're an experienced and detail-oriented Senior Drafter with a strong background in roads, highways or broader transport infrastructure projects.

You're comfortable working with multidisciplinary design teams and can take ownership of drafting outputs through detailed design and delivery.

You Bring

• 8-12 years of demonstrated drafting experience within roads, highways, civil or transport infrastructure projects
• Strong proficiency in relevant drafting and design software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D and/or MicroStation
• Demonstrated experience delivering detailed design and construction documentation
• Strong understanding of drafting standards, QA processes and model coordination
• Experience checking drawings and supporting the quality of drafting outputs
• Ability to work autonomously, manage competing priorities and deliver to project deadlines
• Strong communication skills and a collaborative approach
• Ability to provide guidance and technical support to less experienced drafters

Experience working within digital delivery environments and multidisciplinary transport projects will be highly regarded.
