Job summary

Westpac is seeking a hands-on data engineering leader in Sydney or Melbourne, operating in a hybrid model. You will lead a squad to modernise engineering capability, accelerate governed platforms, and drive reusable, metadata-driven patterns across the enterprise.

You'll stay close to delivery on ADAPT and Unified Framework (UFW) while uplifting quality, productivity and standardisation. Strong communication and coaching skills are essential.

• Cloud data platform experience, ideally Azure Synapse and Spark.

The Opportunity

This is a high-impact opportunity for a hands-on data engineering leader who wants to shape the next generation of enterprise delivery.

You will lead a squad responsible for modernising engineering capability and accelerating adoption of governed platforms, reusable frameworks and modern practices.

At the centre of the role are ADAPT and Unified Framework (UFW), Westpac's Azure-based governed data engineering platform and metadata-driven framework. You will help engineers build pipelines faster, safer and more consistently, while lifting quality, productivity and simplification across the enterprise.

Role Focus

• Lead and coordinate a squad delivering engineering modernisation and capability uplift.
• Stay hands-on across ADAPT and Unified Framework (UFW), guiding designs, code quality and engineering artefacts.
• Accelerate reusable, metadata-driven pipeline patterns and self-service engineering capabilities.
• Modernise Teradata and traditional batch solutions, reducing bespoke builds through standardisation and reuse.
• Champion AMP, GitHub Copilot, AI-assisted engineering, reusable agents and automation that remove manual effort.
• Set high standards across development, testing, deployment and support so solutions are secure, scalable and supportable.
• Coach engineers, remove blockers and partner with Product Owners, Chief Engineers and Technology Domain Owners to improve delivery.

• Strong, current hands-on data engineering experience, with depth in modern pipeline development.
• Experience leading an engineering squad or team while remaining close to technical delivery.
• Cloud data platform and engineering framework experience, ideally including Azure Synapse and Spark.
• Strong DevOps, CI/CD and engineering automation capability.
• A track record building reusable frameworks, patterns and engineering standards.
• Confident stakeholder management, clear communication and a practical coaching style.

Highly regardedingredients …

• ADAPT platform and Unified Framework (UFW) experience.
• Teradata modernisation and migration experience.
• Enterprise Batch Integration Platform (EBIP), Sterling or comparable batch integration experience.
• AMP, GitHub Copilot, AI agents and engineering automation experience.
• Snowflake or other modern data platform experience.

• Broader adoption of ADAPT, UFW, reusable frameworks and modern engineering patterns.
• Faster, safer and more consistent delivery of data pipelines and data products.
• Less bespoke development and manual engineering effort.
• Successful movement away from legacy technologies.
• Better engineering productivity, developer experience, quality, reliability and maintainability.

Importantly, this is a role where you will influence the engineering experience at scale: making modern patterns easier to adopt, helping teams move from legacy technologies, and embedding practical AI-assisted engineering.

This is not a purely strategic role. Your technical judgement, coaching and delivery leadership will be visible in the solutions for the squad ships.
