Job summary

Cochlear is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to verify and validate an implantable medical device. This hands-on role combines electrical testing, automation via Python, and documentation within a dynamic startup-like environment backed by a global medical device company.

The role is a 6-month fixed-term contract based at Cochlear's Macquarie University headquarters, predominantly onsite with some flexible work where possible.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required in Electrical/Mechatronic Engineering or equivalent.
• 5+ years electronics design and verification experience.
• Hands-on with lab equipment (oscilloscopes, spectrum analysers, multimeters).
• Ability to read schematics/PCB layouts and troubleshoot.
• Experience automating tests with Python and documenting verification results.

Responsibilities

• Take ownership of electrical verification against product requirements and specs.
• Develop and review design verification plans, protocols and reports.
• Perform hands-on electrical testing in the lab and record results.
• Create test jigs and Python scripts to automate verification.
• Coordinate EMC/ESD/RF testing with external labs and ensure compliance.
• Support debugging and finalisation of designs during verification builds.
• Maintain rigorous documentation within Cochlear QMS.

The Opportunity

Cochlear is looking for a Senior Electrical Engineer to support the verification and validation of an innovative implantable medical device and its associated accessories. Joining the Incubation Operations team, you will contribute to a critical phase of the project as it moves through design verification builds and into an intensive period of electrical verification and validation.

This is a hands-on role combining electronic verification, test automation, laboratory testing and technical documentation. You will help develop and execute verification protocols, investigate and debug electrical issues, coordinate testing with external test houses, and prepare clear verification reports. There may also be opportunities to support final design activities and develop automated test solutions using Python.

The environment is dynamic and collaborative, with the pace and agility of a start-up supported by the quality systems and expertise of a global medical device organisation. You will work closely with electrical engineering, firmware and test systems colleagues to keep testing activities aligned with project requirements and timelines.

This is a 6-month fixed-term contract based at our global headquarters in Macquarie University. Due to the hands-on laboratory and device-testing requirements, the role is predominantly onsite, with some flexibility where the work permits.

Key Responsibilities:

• Take ownership of electrical verification activities against product requirements and functional specifications.
• Develop, write and review design verification plans, test protocols and verification reports.
• Execute hands-on electrical testing in the laboratory, accurately record results and investigate unexpected outcomes.
• Develop test jigs and Python scripts to automate verification activities and test equipment.
• Support debugging and finalisation of electronic designs where required before and during design verification builds.
• Plan and coordinate EMC, ESD and RF emissions testing, including engagement with external test houses.
• Apply appropriate standards, test methods, limits and pass criteria to support product safety, efficacy and compliance.
• Collaborate closely with electrical, firmware and test systems teams to ensure devices and test systems are configured and operating correctly.
• Provide targeted electrical support during design verification builds and resolve technical issues that could affect project delivery.
• Work within Cochlear Quality Management Systems, maintaining clear, rigorous and traceable documentation.

About You

As we grow our operations, we are looking for people who share our passion for delivering quality hearing solutions to our customers. To add value to Cochlear in this role, you’ll be able to demonstrate the following essential skills and experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering or an equivalent discipline.
• At least five years of electronics design and verification experience, with sound knowledge of analogue and digital circuits and components.
• Hands-on experience with electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, spectrum analysers and multimeters.
• Ability to interpret electronic schematics and PCB layouts and troubleshoot complex electrical issues.
• Experience developing Python scripts to automate test equipment or verification activities.
• Experience preparing clear, concise technical documents, including verification protocols and reports.
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to work within structured quality and documentation requirements.
• A proactive, self-guided approach, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and respond effectively as project priorities evolve.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills across multidisciplinary teams and external partners.

The following experience would be highly regarded:

• EMC, ESD or RF emissions and compliance testing.
• Medical device, implantable device or another highly regulated industry such as defence or aerospace.
• RF circuits or wireless communications.
• Altium or other electrical CAD tools for schematic capture and PCB layout.
• Working with suppliers, subcontractors or external test laboratories.
