Job summary

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
• Minimum 5 years of direct utility-scale solar plant operations and troubleshooting experience.
• Strong fault finding, RCA and operational engineering experience.
• Knowledge of PV electrical infrastructure including inverters, transformers and switchgear.
• Familiarity with HV systems and HV switching procedures.
• Experience with SCADA, monitoring systems and power generation equipment.
• Understanding of AEMO and NSP operational requirements.
• Knowledge of electrical performance analysis and compliance.

Responsibilities

• Provide specialist electrical engineering support across operational utility-scale solar and BESS assets.
• Support plant managers, site technicians and control room operators in resolving operational issues.
• Investigate electrical faults, equipment failures and plant performance issues.
• Respond to operational incidents and provide technical recommendations to restore plant reliability.
• Work closely with O&M teams to improve asset availability, safety and efficiency.
• Lead root cause investigations into electrical equipment failures and operational incidents.
• Troubleshoot utility-scale solar equipment, including inverters, transformers and switchgear.
• Interpret technical reports, service test results and operational data.
• Coordinate technical specialists, equipment suppliers and external consultants where required.
• Manage equipment warranty claims and support minor O&M improvement projects.
• Provide electrical input into new solar and BESS development and delivery activities.
• Support project engineering teams with commissioning and readiness.
• Contribute technical input to proposals and project evaluations.
• Mentor junior engineers as required.

About the Opportunity

An established renewable energy developer and asset owner is seeking an experienced Senior Electrical Engineer to join its Australian engineering team in Sydney.

This position plays a key technical role in supporting the safe, reliable and efficient operation of utility-scale solar and battery energy storage assets across Australia.

Working closely with the Engineering, Operations & Maintenance (O&M), Project Delivery and Commercial teams, the successful candidate will provide hands‑on technical engineering expertise across operational assets, troubleshooting, incident management, grid compliance and performance optimisation.

The role is primarily focused on operational engineering and O&M support, with additional involvement in project delivery, commissioning and development activities.

This is an opportunity for an experienced electrical engineer to take ownership of technical challenges across a growing renewable energy portfolio while contributing to continuous improvement and operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Engineering & Technical Support

• Provide specialist electrical engineering support across operational utility-scale solar and BESS assets.


• Support plant managers, site technicians and control room operators in resolving operational issues.


• Investigate electrical faults, equipment failures and plant performance issues.


• Respond to operational incidents and provide technical recommendations to restore plant reliability.


• Work closely with O&M teams to improve asset availability, safety and operational efficiency.

Troubleshooting & Root Cause Analysis

• Lead root cause investigations into electrical equipment failures and operational incidents.


• Troubleshoot utility-scale solar equipment, including inverters, transformers, switchgear and associated electrical systems.


• Interpret technical reports, service test results and operational data.


• Coordinate technical specialists, equipment suppliers and external consultants where required.


• Manage equipment warranty claims and support minor O&M improvement projects.

High Voltage Systems & Grid Compliance

• Provide technical support for HV electrical systems, switching activities and associated operational procedures.


• Prepare and review HV switching documentation and switching sheets.


• Support remote switching operations when required.


• Investigate and resolve operational compliance matters involving AEMO, Network Service Providers (NSPs) and Generator Performance Standards (GPS).


• Support compliance with electrical safety requirements and applicable operational standards.

Asset Performance & Continuous Improvement

• Analyse SCADA and operational performance data to identify technical issues and improvement opportunities.


• Support plant performance optimisation and equipment reliability initiatives.


• Calculate and verify contractual plant availability.


• Review and update O&M procedures, technical documentation and operating manuals.


• Collaborate with internal technical specialists to develop best operating practices.

Project Delivery & Engineering Collaboration

• Provide electrical engineering input into new solar and BESS development and delivery activities.


• Support project engineering teams with technical assessments, commissioning and operational readiness.


• Contribute technical input to commercial proposals and project evaluations.


• Work collaboratively with engineering, project delivery, commercial and O&M stakeholders.


• Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior electrical engineers as required.

Skills & Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.


• Minimum 5years of direct utility-scale solar plant operations and troubleshooting experience.


• Strong practical experience in electrical fault finding, root cause analysis and operational engineering support.


• Knowledge of utility-scale solar PV electrical infrastructure, including inverters, transformers and switchgear.


• Familiarity with high‑voltage electrical systems and HV switching procedures.


• Experience working with SCADA, electrical monitoring systems and power generation equipment.


• Understanding of AEMO and NSP operational requirements.


• Knowledge of electrical performance analysis and operational compliance.


• Strong communication, problem‑solving and stakeholder management skills.


• Ability to work independently and collaborate across multidisciplinary engineering teams.

Highly Desirable

• Experience working for a renewable energy developer, independent power producer (IPP) or asset owner.


• Exposure to utility-scale BESS operations and maintenance.


• Experience with SMA or Ingeteam utility-scale inverters.


• Knowledge of power quality and monitoring tools such as Elspec Sapphire.


• Experience supporting solar/BESS commissioning and project delivery.


• Previous experience mentoring junior engineers.


• Strong Microsoft Excel and technical reporting capabilities.
