Job summary

Exclaim IT is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to join a federal government client. You will build and maintain robust ETL pipelines using Azure Data Factory and Synapse, design scalable data models, and ensure governance and quality across the data lifecycle.

You will collaborate with data scientists, engineers, and analysts while operating in a hybrid work setup with onsite presence required. Canberra and Brisbane candidates are invited to apply.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, IT, or related field (or equivalent experience).
• Experience with Azure data services and cloud-based data platforms.
• Proven background in data engineering, ETL, and data modelling.

Responsibilities

We are seeking a Senior Data Engineer to join a federal government client. In this role, you’ll collaborate with data scientists, software engineers, business analysts, and cloud architects to build and maintain robust data infrastructure. Your work will support the optimisation, delivery of services, and development of enhanced analytics solutions. The position requires onsite presence, with some flexibility for remote work.

This role is open for Canberra and Brisbane candidates.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and maintain efficient, secure ETL pipelines for data transfer and transformation
• Collaborate across teams to deliver integrated solutions using Azure Data Factory, Data Lakes, Synapse, and related tools
• Design and maintain scalable data models ensuring accuracy, consistency, and performance
• Ensure data governance, security, and quality across the entire lifecycle
• Document technical specifications, workflows, data flows, and operational processes
• Identify and resolve data-related issues, collaborating to develop lasting solutions
• Contribute to agile processes, including ceremonies, code reviews, and performance tuning
• Remain current with emerging technologies and apply insights to improve tools and processes
• Take on additional tasks as directed by leadership
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, IT, or related field (or equivalent experience)
• Azure DevOps experience and/or certifications (e.g., Microsoft Azure Data Engineer, AWS Certified Data Analytics)
• Understanding of RESTful APIs and their implementation
• Experience in agile environments and cross-functional teams

Skills and experience

• Proven background in data engineering, data integration, ETL, and modelling
• Strong command of SQL, with ability to write optimised scripts, stored procedures, and functions
• Hands-on experience with Azure data services (Data Factory, Synapse, Blob Storage, Functions, ML)
• Ability to manage competing priorities and deliver high-quality outcomes under time constraints
• Strong communication, negotiation, and stakeholder engagement skills
• Effective team player with a collaborative approach to problem-solving
