Job summary

The Decipher Bureau is seeking a Senior Cyber Security Engineer to deliver and continuously improve security controls across on‑prem, cloud and SaaS environments in a heavily regulated sector. You will work hands‑on within the Security Engineering team to tackle complex security challenges and help shape engineering standards and solutions.

This role emphasizes technical depth, automation, and knowledge sharing across the team, with opportunities to mentor engineers and influence security

Qualifications

• 6+ years in security engineering or equivalent
• Experience solving complex problems independently in regulated environments
• Hands-on in diverse security domains including cloud/SaaS, network and endpoint security
• Ability to translate policy and risk into practical engineering outcomes
• Excellent communication with stakeholders at varying levels of seniority

Responsibilities

• Design, build, configure, test and deploy security controls across on-prem, cloud and SaaS environments
• Own and optimise security platforms including architecture, configuration and vendor management
• Design, review and govern network security policies, firewall rules and secure connectivity
• Apply scripting, automation and DevOps-style practices to improve efficiency and auditability
• Manage SIEM onboarding, tune detection use cases and support vulnerability remediation
• Mentor other engineers and contribute to architecture and governance forums

Our client is a well-established Australian business in a heavily regulated sector. Security is a genuine priority for them, and they're hiring a Senior Cyber Security Engineer to take on the hands‑on delivery, integration and continuous improvement of security controls across their on-premises, cloud and SaaS environments.

The role
You’ll be a senior technical contributor within the Security Engineering team, working across complex security challenges and helping shape engineering standards and solutions.

The role is hands‑on, with a focus on technical depth, automation and solving complex problems, while also supporting and sharing knowledge with the wider team.

Before getting into it:
Salary: Up to $200,000 base + super + bonus
Location: Sydney preferred, Melbourne also an option
Process: 2–3 stages

What you'll do

• Design, build, configure, test and deploy security controls across on-premises, cloud and SaaS environments
• Own and optimise assigned security platforms, including architecture, configuration, tuning, lifecycle and vendor management
• Design, review and govern network security policies, including firewall rules, segmentation and secure connectivity
• Apply scripting, workflow automation, APIs and DevOps-style practices to improve the efficiency, consistency and auditability of security engineering work
• Manage SIEM/log onboarding, tune detection use cases and alert logic, and support vulnerability remediation across technology teams
• Provide secondary/backup support for identity and access management (IDAM) and privileged access management (PAM)
• Share technical expertise and mentor other engineers, and contribute to architecture and governance forums

What you’ll bring

• 6+ years' experience in security engineering, cloud/security platform engineering or infrastructure security, including handling complex, ambiguous problems independently
• Hands‑on experience across four or more of: SASE/network security, firewall and network security policy, email security, EDR, SIEM/security monitoring, cloud/SaaS security, vulnerability remediation
• Experience with scripting, APIs or workflow automation (e.g. PowerShell, Python, Power Automate, Logic Apps)
• Ability to work effectively in a regulated environment, translating policy, risk and audit requirements into practical, evidenced engineering outcomes
• Excellent communication skills, confident engaging with stakeholders at varying levels of seniority
• Demonstrated experience mentoring or guiding other engineers
• Relevant tertiary qualifications or equivalent practical experience

Advantageous

• Hands‑on experience with platforms such as Netskope, Mimecast, CrowdStrike, or SIEM/vulnerability management tooling
• Experience securing Microsoft Azure and/or AWS environments
• Industry certifications such as CISSP, CISM, CCSP, AZ-500, SC-200, GSEC, CEH or OSCP
• Experience identifying practical automation or AI-enabled use cases for security engineering
