Job summary

Canva is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to help scale the rendering and export infrastructure that turns designs into downloadable files for billions of interactions. You will work on Chromium-based rendering, PDF post-processing, and reliability across distributed systems.

You’ll contribute to monitoring, testing, and documentation, collaborating with teams to ensure robust, accessible exports for Enterprise customers.

Qualifications

Deep experience with Chromium or another browser rendering engine.
Proficient in C++ to work with complex third‑party codebases.
Solid Java backend engineering for scalable products.
Experience debugging layered, multi‑codebase systems.
Knowledge of PDF specification or PDF post‑processing.
Background in rendering pipelines, graphics programming, or print systems.

Responsibilities

Partner with staff engineer to investigate and resolve complex Chromium issues, including upgrade breakages and rendering race conditions.
Own the PDF accessibility post-processing pipeline and implement tagging/compliance (PDF/UA, WCAG) for exports.
Build monitoring and testing infrastructure to catch Chromium changes before production.
Design accessibility solutions resilient to Chromium output structure changes.
Contribute to export infrastructure challenges including format optimization and distributed systems reliability.
Document complex Chromium behavior and architectural decisions to grow team knowledge.
