Job summary

Valiant Finance is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to own API design and backend systems in a fast-paced fintech. Based in Sydney with hybrid working, you’ll work on RESTful services, database design, and cloud infrastructure while collaborating with product and design teams.

You’ll join a remote-friendly team that values pragmatism, reliability, and clean, well-documented code, with opportunities to impact core lending workflows.

Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years of commercial Ruby on Rails experience.
• Experience integrating with multiple external APIs.
• Experience with PostgreSQL and database design.
• Experience deploying and maintaining infrastructure on AWS, GCP, or Heroku.
• Experience with Rspec and Sidekiq.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Design and build RESTful APIs for front-end apps and partners.
• Integrate with external services like Salesforce, Auth0, Cloudflare.
• Architect solutions with HA, security, and performance in mind.
• Maintain infrastructure on a major cloud provider to support growth.

Are you a Senior Ruby on Rails Backend Engineer looking to join a fun, fast paced fintech environment.

Our engineering team is remote-friendly but we work from our Surry Hills office 2-3 times a week to collaborate. We're looking for a candidate who is passionate about engineering and technology, can solve technical problems and is able to communicate problems and solutions with ease.

What You'll Be Doing

• Designing and building RESTful APIs for our front-end applications and partners
• Integrating with a range of external services such as Salesforce, Auth0, Cloudflare, and more
• Architecting solutions that meet our high availability, security, and performance requirements
• Maintaining our infrastructure on a major cloud provider to support our rapid growth
• Writing well-structured, tested, and documented code that's a pleasure to maintain
• Working closely with our Product, Design, and other teams to refine deliverables and bring new features to life

What We're Looking For

We're seeking a passionate backend engineer who can solve complex technical problems and communicate solutions with ease.

Required Experience

• Minimum 5 years of commercial Ruby on Rails experience
• Proven experience integrating with multiple external APIs
• Experience with database design and performance tuning, particularly with PostgreSQL
• Experience designing and maintaining infrastructure with AWS, GCP, or Heroku
• Experience with testing frameworks like Rspec
• Experience with high-volume background job processing frameworks like Sidekiq
• Strong experience designing and maintaining both public and private REST APIs
• Proficiency with development tools like Linear or Jira
• Strong written and verbal communication skills

Bonus Points

• Experience with security best practices (e.g., OWASP, STRIDE)
• Experience with synchronising data between distributed systems
• Experience in high-volume production environments with strict availability SLAs
• Knowledge of the financial services industry (lending or corporate finance)
• A Computer Science degree
• Experience navigating GDPR and/or SOC2
