Job summary

Ressam in Canberra, ACT is seeking a Senior Azure Java Stack Software Engineer to design, develop, enhance and support mission-critical enterprise applications and large-scale data platforms supporting national law enforcement and intelligence capabilities.

This senior full-stack role combines hands-on development with technical leadership and end-to-end solution ownership, working across distributed systems and Azure-hosted environments with occasional remote days after six months.

Qualifications

• 7+ years building enterprise Java applications.
• Experience with backend services, APIs and modern web apps.
• Strong microservices and distributed systems expertise.
• Experience with large-scale data processing and integration (Kafka, NiFi, Elasticsearch).
• Solid OO design, secure coding, performance tuning and DevSecOps practices.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, deploy and support secure Java apps, APIs and microservices.
• Own end-to-end solutions from requirements to production support.
• Lead architecture, integration and engineering across Azure-hosted environments.
• Troubleshoot production issues and improve performance, security and resilience.

Senior Azure Java Stack Software Engineer

The successful candidate will design, develop, enhance and support mission-critical enterprise applications and large-scale data platforms supporting national law enforcement and intelligence capabilities. This is a senior full-stack Java engineering role with a backend focus, combining hands-on development with technical leadership and end-to-end solution ownership.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, deploy and support secure, scalable and highly available Java applications, APIs, microservices and distributed data solutions.
• Take end-to-end ownership of technical solutions from requirements through deployment, production support and continuous improvement.
• Lead technical design, architecture, integration and engineering activities across distributed systems, data platforms and Azure-hosted environments.
• Troubleshoot complex production issues, perform root-cause analysis and improve application performance, reliability, security and operational resilience.
• Provide technical leadership through mentoring, code reviews, engineering best practices and stakeholder engagement.

Required Experience

• Minimum 7 years of experience developing enterprise applications using Java, Spring Framework, Spring Boot, JPA/Hibernate, Maven, REST APIs and JSON.
• Recent hands-on experience across backend services, APIs, integrations and modern web-based applications in enterprise environments.
• Strong experience with microservices, event-driven architectures, distributed systems, service integration patterns and enterprise data platforms.
• Experience with large-scale data processing and integration technologies such as Apache Kafka, Apache NiFi and Elasticsearch, including high-volume or mission-critical environments.
• Strong software engineering fundamentals including object-oriented design, design patterns, secure coding, performance tuning, concurrency and multithreading.
• Experience with SQL databases such as Oracle or PostgreSQL, NoSQL concepts, data modelling, query optimisation, Git, Jenkins CI/CD, automated testing and DevSecOps practices.

Desirable Experience

• Microsoft Azure services and cloud-native design patterns, Linux, Docker/Kubernetes and Infrastructure as Code using Terraform or Ansible.
• Modern front-end development using React or Angular, TypeScript, JavaScript, HTML5 and CSS3.
• AI-assisted software engineering tools and modern observability platforms.

Working Arrangements

The role is based in Canberra and requires candidates to work primarily onsite. Remote work of up to two days per week may be negotiated after six months, subject to agency approval and policy. The estimated start date is 2 November 2026.
