Job summary

Montgomery Advisory in Sydney is seeking a Senior Associate or Special Counsel to join its Indirect Tax practice. You will independently run GST matters, advise on M&A and cross-border tax issues, and lead ATO engagements.

The role emphasizes client relationships, development of junior lawyers, and collaboration with senior practitioners to deliver practical tax solutions for domestic and international clients.

Qualifications

• 6+ years' post-admission experience in taxation law with a strong focus on indirect tax and GST.
• Experience managing complex tax matters with autonomy.
• Experience in transaction structuring and cross-border tax matters.
• Strong commercial judgement and the ability to translate complex tax issues into practical advice.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience supervising and developing junior lawyers.
• An interest in business development and building long-term client relationships.

Responsibilities

• Independently run complex GST matters, including audits, investigations and objection processes.
• Advise on the indirect tax implications of high-value transactions and structuring.
• Assist clients with transaction design and restructuring, with a focus on property and financial services.
• Assess indirect tax exposure arising from international and cross-border dealings.
• Lead ATO engagements, including ruling applications and disclosures.
• Partner with senior stakeholders to identify risks and provide practical solutions.
• Support development of junior lawyers and client relationship building.
