Job summary

SMEC (an SJ Group company) is seeking a Senior Associate Engineer - Roads & Highways (Pavements) to lead delivery of complex pavement projects in Australia. You will guide project teams, mentor engineers and influence technical outcomes while growing the pavements capability for New South Wales.

The role emphasizes client engagement, project leadership and business development, delivering innovative, technically excellent solutions for major road, highway and transport infrastructure projects.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in civil engineering or equivalent.
  • 12+ years' experience in pavement engineering and transport infrastructure.
  • Demonstrated expertise in pavement design, rehabilitation and asset management.
  • Chartered Engineer status or eligibility to obtain.
  • Strong leadership and client relationship skills.

Responsibilities

  • Lead pavement engineering design and technical delivery across major infrastructure projects.
  • Act as technical authority for pavement design and asset management solutions.
  • Provide strategic technical guidance to project teams and clients.
  • Lead multidisciplinary project delivery and quality assurance activities.
  • Develop and maintain strong client relationships across public and private sectors.
  • Support business development, proposals and pursuits.
  • Mentor engineers across pavements and transport teams.
  • Drive innovation and best-practice engineering outcomes.
  • Contribute to capability growth and strategic planning within Roads & Highways.

The Role

Are you ready to lead the delivery of complex pavement engineering solutions on some of Australia's most significant transport infrastructure projects?

As a Senior Associate Engineer - Roads & Highways (Pavements), you'll provide technical leadership across a diverse portfolio of major road, highway, airport and transport infrastructure projects. You'll be recognised as a subject matter expert, guiding project teams, mentoring engineers and influencing technical outcomes while helping to grow and strengthen our pavements capability across New South Wales.

This is an opportunity to play a key role in client engagement, project leadership and business development while delivering innovative, technically excellent solutions that help shape the future of transport infrastructure.

Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To
  • Lead pavement engineering design and technical delivery across major infrastructure projects
  • Act as a technical authority for pavement design, rehabilitation and asset management solutions
  • Provide strategic technical guidance to project teams and clients

  • Develop and maintain strong client relationships across government and private sector markets
  • Support business development activities, proposals and pursuits
  • Mentor and develop engineers across the pavements and broader transport teams
  • Drive innovation, technical excellence and best-practice engineering outcomes
  • Contribute to capability growth and strategic planning within the Roads & Highways business
About You

Suitable applicants will be/have:

  • Bachelor of Civil Engineering or equivalent
  • 12+ years' experience in pavement engineering and transport infrastructure
  • Demonstrated expertise in pavement design, rehabilitation and asset management
  • Extensive knowledge of Austroads guides, TfNSW standards and Australian Standards
  • Chartered Engineer status (or eligibility to obtain)
  • Proven experience leading major infrastructure projects and multidisciplinary teams
  • Strong client relationship management and stakeholder engagement capabilities
  • Experience preparing and overseeing technical proposals and project bids
  • Excellent communication, leadership and mentoring skills
  • A recognised reputation for technical excellence within the transport infrastructure industry
