Job summary

Westpac Group in Sydney is seeking a Senior AI Engineer to own complex intelligence and protection workstreams within AI Services. The role is hybrid, based in Sydney or Melbourne, and focuses on financial crime prevention through production-ready AI solutions.

You will design, build, and govern AI workflows across data sources, APIs, and human review experiences. You will work on regulated, governance-forward systems involving Fraud/AML, with emphasis on traceability, safety, and human

Join AI Services as a Senior - hands-on - AI Engineer owning complex intelligence and protection workstreams.

You will build production-ready products across governed data, backend services, APIs, AI workflows and human review experiences.

The role supports business critical Financial Crime Prevention (Fraud, AML), plus employee, customer or operational decisions.

Your Core Focus

• Own detailed design, implementation, verification, release and operational readiness for a complex workstream.
• Build reliable contracts connecting source data, events, services, models, agents, user journeys and downstream systems.
• Maintain traceable evidence across entities, facts, signals and review outcomes.
• Ensure missing, stale, denied, incomplete and unavailable information is represented correctly.
• Implement agent boundaries using typed inputs, approved tools, access checks, limits, citations, audit and safe failure.
• Protect sensitive data through least privilege, minimisation, pseudonymisation and controlled disclosure.
• Own versioning, deployment, rollback, recovery, diagnostics, incident support and continuous improvement.

What you will bring

• Strong full-stack engineering across backend services, APIs, data stores and modern web applications, using technologies such as Go or Python, SQL, TypeScript, React and Next.js.
• Strong API, event and data-contract design, including identity, entitlements, durable state, audit and recovery.
• Data engineering expertise covering lineage, quality, event time, knowledge time, corrections and purpose-based access.
• Practical graph and investigation engineering across entity resolution, typed relationships, bounded traversal and evidence paths.
• Strong AI service engineering across ML signals, LLMs, RAG, agents, evaluation, monitoring, controls and safe fallbacks.
• Domain experience has featured Fraud and Financial Crime protection.
• Strong judgement about when rules, SQL, conventional ML, graphs or generative AI are the right solution.

You will combine senior delivery ownership with specialist intelligence and protection engineering, making evidence, provenance, uncertainty and limitations clear while preserving human decision authority.

You will help deliver practical AI outcomes while applying Westpac engineering, security, privacy, Responsible AI, risk and operational resilience requirements.
