Job summary

Australian War Memorial in Campbell, ACT, is seeking an ongoing full-time Security Officer (APS3). The role covers security, asset protection and building services, with duties from monitoring security systems to fielding mobile patrols and first aid responses.

Applicants must obtain and maintain security clearances and a valid First Aid qualification, plus Working with Vulnerable People registration. The Memorial offers a structured roster and opportunities to contribute to event security.

Job description

The Role

Under general direction, the Security Officer is responsible for implementing Memorial security and a range of building and asset services. The work involves: advising and reporting on security matters, monitoring and performing security services, and providing a point of contact for all building and associated services.

Security Officers provide mobile security patrols across all Memorial sites, monitor security systems, staff critical access points including screening as required, escort contractors, visitors and guests, and implement approved security arrangements. In emergencies, the Security Officer may act as Deputy House Warden and assume responsibility for visitors, staff, buildings, and contents.

Core Responsibilities
  • Under general direction participate in provision of a client focused security and facility service including:
    • Provide advice and information to staff and visitors on a range of security matters;
    • Provide a client service for staff and contractors on a range of asset and building services including building and exhibition maintenance, cleaning, equipment management and repair;
    • Staff the static control room position, monitoring of security systems including some complex programming;
    • Perform mobile patrols and security/emergency response capability across all sites;
    • Perform a First Aid responder role as required;
    • Manage building access and movement of personal items, and security and disposal of lost property;
    • Perform front-of-house security services to visitors and staff.
  • Participate in security arrangements for ceremonies, VIP visits, and escort official visitors and guests.
  • Provide short term relief of senior security staff and assist in training in emergency procedures and safety equipment.
  • Assist senior security staff with procedural and training development, performing administrative duties, and provide day to day supervision and assistance to new team members.
  • Implement approved and at times complex operational procedures.
  • As Deputy House Warden, implement procedures to direct and control staff and visitors in emergencies and assist and participate in all training drills and exercises.
  • Manual handling and movement of objects, including but not limited to bollards and barricades.
  • Abide by and promote the principles and practices of Work Health and Safety as outlined in the WHS Act, taking reasonable care for their own health and safety and ensuring that their acts or omissions do not adversely affect the health and safety of other persons.

Additional Requirements

It is a requirement that security members work to a fixed roster. You may be required to work regularly on weekends and public holidays. The fortnight roster cycle may look similar to the following: 5 days on, 2 days off, 3 days on, 4 days off OR Monday to Friday inclusive of public holidays.

In addition, there is an expectation that Security members will make themselves available on large event days as required such as Anzac Day and Remembrance Day.

Due to the physical nature of the role, it is a requirement for all Security members to be able to move freely up and down stairs, stand for extended periods on hard surfaces and walk for extended periods of time.

Security members are required to wear a corporate uniform and maintain a neat and tidy appearance adhering to dress and appearance procedures and standards.

Position Eligibility
  • Under section 22(8) of the Public Service Act 1999, employees must be Australian citizens to be employed in the Australian Public Service (APS).
  • All applicants external to AWM that are offered employment will be required to successfully undergo a National Police Check, even if they currently hold a security clearance. The check is conducted in accordance with the Australian Government Protective Security Policy Framework requirements.
Mandatory Requirements
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting Level 2 security clearance.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid First Aid qualification.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid registration through the Working with Vulnerable People scheme.
  • A current Australian driver’s licence.

Successful applicants engaged into the APS will be subject to a probation period.
