Job summary

About The Role

Karnet Prison Farm is a minimum-security prison located 75km south of Perth. The prison handles only male offenders and functions as a pre-release centre with a focus on rehabilitation and re-integration in preparation for their return to the community. The prison’s farm which covers an area of approximately four hundred hectares, comprises an abattoir, dairy, poultry and market garden for supply of meat, milk, eggs and vegetables for use by the state’s prisons.

This is a permanent, full time vacancy

About The Role

Karnet Prison Farm is a minimum-security prison located 75km south of Perth. The prison handles only male offenders and functions as a pre-release centre with a focus on rehabilitation and re-integration in preparation for their return to the community. The prison’s farm which covers an area of approximately four hundred hectares, comprises an abattoir, dairy, poultry and market garden for supply of meat, milk, eggs and vegetables for use by the state’s prisons.

The Section 95 Supervisor coordinates and delivers reparation activities and programs in the community covering general construction, building maintenance, landscaping, conservation and land management to support prison operations. The position provides on the job instruction, accredited training and supervision to prisoners who work in this area. The position holds a supervisory role over other staff in this area.

Suitability Requirements

• Experience: Demonstrated experience in the organisation and delivery of industry standard practices in a group environment for a relevant industry field such as general construction, building maintenance, landscaping, conservation or land management.
• Supervisory skills: The ability to supervise a team including planning, prioritisation and delegation of workloads to ensure timeframes are met. Leads by example, models integrity and establishes effective workplace relationships and networks. Provides guidance, mentoring and development of team members. The ability to carry out reviews in line with the Departments' performance appraisal strategy
• Interpersonal skills: The ability to communicate clearly and effectively with internal and external stakeholders utilising written and oral skills. The ability to question, listen, understand, and discuss calmly while adapting to audiences particularly those relevant to minority groups, non-English speaking backgrounds and indigenous people. The ability to negotiate confidently and discuss issues thoughtfully. Develop, maintain and participate in work groups to achieve positive outcomes. Working professionally with others in a team environment.
• Computer skills: A comprehensive understanding of computer applications such as spreadsheets, databases, document writing and emails. The ability to learn in-house computer systems.

Qualifications

• Certificate III in a construction trade eg Brick and Block Laying, Carpentry and Joinery and/or a Certificate III in Horticulture (and/or equivalent with relevant specialty area, eg parks and gardens, landscaping, conservation and land management, natural area restoration)
• Construction Industry White Card
