Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) is seeking a Scientist (Mapping) to lead vegetation mapping projects across New South Wales. You will combine field data, high-resolution imagery and spatial analysis to classify native vegetation communities and support biodiversity conservation and environmental planning.
The role offers hybrid working arrangements, a Queanbeyan location upon negotiation, and a salary range of AUD 112,375 to AUD 124,158 per year plus
Do you want your work to make a difference for NSW? Working to protect the state’s environment and heritage.
Our Science and Insights team is currently seeking to appoint a Scientist (Mapping)! Join a team at the forefront of vegetation science, spatial analysis and environmental decision-making across New South Wales. As a Scientist (Mapping), you’ll play a key role in delivering high-quality vegetation mapping projects that support biodiversity conservation, environmental planning and the sustainable management of our natural landscapes. Working alongside experienced ecologists and mapping specialists, you'll help generate the scientific evidence that informs important land management and environmental outcomes across the state.
In this role, you’ll contribute to a range of vegetation mapping projects by combining ecological field survey data, high-resolution aerial and satellite imagery, and spatial analysis techniques to classify and map native vegetation communities across NSW. You'll undertake field-based vegetation assessments, interpret environmental and spatial datasets and assist in producing vegetation maps, technical reports and scientifically robust spatial products that support environmental assessment, planning and conservation initiatives. As part of a collaborative and highly skilled team, you'll work closely with ecologists, scientists and mapping specialists to deliver high-quality outcomes while maintaining rigorous scientific, data management and mapping standards.
You’re an environmental science professional with knowledge of Australian native vegetation and experience applying ecological principles in either field survey, vegetation assessment, vegetation mapping or related environmental projects. You bring demonstrated experience using GIS and spatial datasets to analyse environmental information and are confident interpreting aerial photography, satellite imagery and field-collected data to support evidence-based mapping outcomes. Your attention to detail, analytical thinking and commitment to scientific rigour enable you to produce accurate, reliable and high-quality work. Equally important are your strong communication and collaboration skills. You enjoy working as part of a multidisciplinary team, building productive relationships and contributing to shared outcomes. You're motivated to learn, adaptable when faced with new challenges and able to manage competing priorities while delivering results within agreed timeframes. With a proactive approach to problem solving and a passion for understanding and protecting NSW's unique environments, you're excited by the opportunity to contribute to meaningful science that informs environmental policy, planning and conservation outcomes across the state.
