Job summary

Evolve Scientific seeks a hands-on Scientific Assistant (OO2) to support laboratory, glasshouse and field research in Toowoomba. This ad hoc casual role offers shifts from 3 to 36 hours per week, Monday to Friday.

You will work across laboratory processing, trial support, field sampling and recording, following established protocols and QA procedures. The ideal candidate will have a scientific or agricultural qualification, laboratory or field experience, strong organisational and communication

Qualifications

• Qualifications in a scientific, agricultural or related discipline preferred.
• Experience working in laboratory, glasshouse, agricultural or field environments.
• Knowledge of crop agronomy or agricultural research techniques advantageous.
• Strong organisational and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Willingness to travel regionally and work outdoors.
• Current Australian drivers license (truck license desirable).

Responsibilities

• Assist with laboratory processing of field samples.

About the Role

Our client, a respected Government organisation, is seeking a Scientific Assistant (OO2) to support laboratory, glasshouse and field-based research within their Crop & Food Science division. This is a hands‑on role suited to someone with an interest in scientific research and agriculture who enjoys both laboratory and outdoor work. Based in Toowoomba, this is an ad hoc casual opportunity, with shifts ranging from a minimum of 3 hours up to 36 hours per week, Monday to Friday, depending on operational requirements.

The successful candidate will be responsible for, but not limited to:

• Assisting with laboratory-based processing of field samples.
• Maintaining plants and supporting trial work within glasshouse and field environments.
• Attending and sampling field trials.
• Following scientific protocols and quality assurance procedures to support research outcomes.
• Working independently to complete allocated tasks while supporting broader project objectives.
• Maintaining accurate records and contributing to the integrity of research projects.
• Working safely in accordance with workplace health and safety requirements.
• Building positive working relationships with colleagues and project stakeholders.

Skills & Experience

The successful candidate should have:

• Certificate, diploma or degree qualifications in a scientific, agricultural or related discipline (highly regarded).
• Experience working within laboratory, glasshouse, agricultural or field-based environments.
• Knowledge of crop agronomy or agricultural research techniques would be advantageous.
• Strong organisational and communication skills.
• The ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• A willingness to travel to regional locations and work outdoors when required.
• A high level of attention to detail and commitment to following established procedures.
• Current Australian drivers license (truck license desirable).

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
• Ability to lift, bend, kneel, twist and climb as required.
• Comfortable working in laboratory, glasshouse and outdoor field environments.
• Willingness to undertake overnight travel when required.
