Job summary

Gilmour Space Technologies is seeking a Satellites Operations Engineer II to lead activities across mission phases, monitor health, and execute spacecraft commands from our Brisbane–North Queensland facilities. The role emphasizes cross‑functional collaboration and hands‑on operational excellence.

You will develop mission plans, scripts, and procedures, support testing and validation, and participate in on‑call duties to ensure mission success in a dynamic space environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant technical discipline.
  • Minimum 2 years of spacecraft or mission operations experience.
  • Understanding of spacecraft subsystems and orbital mechanics.
  • Experience developing operational procedures and test plans.
  • Proficiency in Linux, Bash, Python, and SQL.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate, and execute satellite mission activities across all mission phases.
  • Monitor spacecraft health and telemetry; execute commands per approved procedures.
  • Develop mission plans, schedules, command sequences, and operational products.
  • Develop, execute, and document spacecraft and ground testing activities.
  • Investigate anomalies and support recovery planning.
  • Develop and maintain operational procedures, flight rules, and documentation.
  • Support mission control systems and ground segment operations.
  • Identify improvements to processes, tools, automation, and mission performance.
  • Collaborate with spacecraft engineering, software, AIT, and mission management teams.
  • Participate in on-call and out-of-hours operational support.

  • Plan, coordinate, and execute satellite mission activities across all mission phases, including commissioning, operations, and end-of-life activities.
  • Monitor spacecraft health and performance, analyse telemetry, and execute spacecraft commanding in accordance with approved procedures and operational constraints.
  • Develop mission plans, activity schedules, command sequences, and operational products to support mission objectives.
  • Develop, execute, and document spacecraft, ground system, and operational testing activities, including validation, verification, and mission rehearsals.
  • Investigate spacecraft anomalies, perform troubleshooting and root cause analysis, and support recovery planning and implementation.
  • Develop and maintain operational procedures, flight rules, documentation, and training materials.
  • Support mission control systems, ground segment operations, and operational readiness activities.
  • Identify and implement improvements to operational processes, tools, automation, and mission performance.
  • Collaborate with spacecraft engineering, software, AIT, and mission management teams to ensure safe and successful mission execution.
  • Participate in on-call and out-of-hours operational support as required.
Mandatory Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Mechatronics, Computer Science, Physics, or a related technical discipline.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in spacecraft operations, mission operations, spacecraft testing, systems engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Understanding of spacecraft subsystems, mission planning, mission operations, and orbital mechanics.
  • Experience developing and executing operational procedures, test plans, or mission activities.
  • Experience monitoring telemetry, analysing spacecraft performance, and executing spacecraft commands.
  • Proficiency in Linux, Bash scripting, Python, and SQL.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams and support out-of-hours operations when required.
Desired Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Experience supporting LEOP, spacecraft commissioning, or in-orbit testing activities.
  • Experience with flight dynamics products and tools (Orekit, GMAT, STK, or equivalent): orbit determination, manoeuvre planning, conjunction assessment and collision-avoidance workflows.
  • Experience in spacecraft Assembly, Integration and Testing (AIT), verification and validation, or mission simulations.
  • Familiarity with flight dynamics systems, ground segment infrastructure, and CCSDS standards.
  • Experience developing automation tools or software for mission operations.
  • Experience with Grafana, cloud-based mission systems, or DevOps practices.
  • Experience operating Earth observation, communications, scientific, or defence satellite missions.
