An established asphalt and civil construction business operating in the Geelong region is seeking an experienced Sales & Estimating Manager to take ownership of its sales, estimating and business development function.

We are looking for someone who genuinely knows asphalt.

This is not simply a quoting role, nor is it a general sales position. We need someone who understands how asphalt and civil works are assessed, measured, priced and delivered – and who has the commercial ability and drive to actively pursue opportunities and convert them into profitable work.

The successful candidate will manage opportunities from initial enquiry through site assessment, estimating, quotation or tender, client follow-up and negotiation, through to commercial handover once work is secured.

Key Responsibilities

Actively identify and pursue new asphalt and civil work opportunities.

Develop new client relationships while maintaining and growing existing accounts.

Respond to enquiries, RFQs and tender opportunities and actively follow them through.

Meet clients, undertake site inspections and measure proposed works.

Review drawings, specifications, scopes of work and tender documentation.

Calculate areas, quantities and asphalt tonnages and determine the labour, plant, materials, cartage, traffic management and subcontractor requirements needed to build an accurate estimate.

Obtain supplier and subcontractor pricing as required for estimating and tender preparation.

Prepare accurate and commercially sound estimates, quotations and tender submissions.

Price work with appropriate consideration of productivity, site conditions, project risk, overheads and margin.

Present and discuss quotations with clients, follow up submitted quotes and progress opportunities through to a decision.

Negotiate commercial matters within agreed authority and identify variations or additional work opportunities.

Maintain clear visibility over outstanding quotations, upcoming opportunities and secured work.

Maintain the forward sales and estimating pipeline to support management and operational planning.

Provide a clear commercial handover of secured projects to the Operations Supervisor, including scope, quantities, client requirements, pricing assumptions, allowances and project requirements.

Review estimated versus actual job performance with management to improve future estimating and project profitability.

About You

Genuine asphalt, pavement or closely related civil construction experience.

Strong practical knowledge of asphalt paving, asphalt repairs, pavement maintenance and associated civil works.

Demonstrated experience estimating, quoting or tendering asphalt or civil projects, including larger or more complex work.

Ability to inspect a job, understand the scope and resources required, and build a commercially sound price.

Ability to calculate areas, quantities and asphalt tonnages and understand labour, plant, trucks/cartage, materials, traffic management and subcontractor requirements.

Ability to interpret plans, specifications, scopes and tender documentation.

Strong commercial awareness, including job costs, margins, profitability and project risk.

Confidence dealing directly with clients and discussing scope, pricing and project requirements.

A proactive approach to business development, including approaching prospective clients, chasing opportunities and consistently following up quotations.

Strong communication, negotiation, relationship-building, planning and organisational skills.

Competent computer skills for estimating, quotations, tenders and general administration.
