Job summary

Middlemount Coal Mine in Queensland seeks a Health & Safety professional to lead site safety initiatives and ensure regulatory compliance. Reporting to the Health Safety Superintendent, you will drive incident investigations, risk management, and provide guidance across the site’s safety programs.

You will liaise with medical professionals, manage rehabilitation for injured workers, and foster robust stakeholder relationships while delivering continuous improvement and strong safety performance.

Qualifications

  • Experience in Health & Safety in resources/mining environments.
  • Knowledge of Coal Mining Safety and Health Act & Regulations.
  • Qualification in Occupational Health & Safety or Occupational Hygiene.

Responsibilities

  • Providing direction and strategic planning to the site's Health and Safety team.
  • Coordinating support services in line with site goals and legislative obligations.
  • Ensuring compliance with the Site Safety & Health Management System and the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act and Regulations.
  • Delivering business objectives in a cost-effective and safe manner.
  • Overseeing task planning, including health, safety, environment and community impact.
  • Assisting in operational budgets and resource cost control.
  • Developing and implementing standards, procedures and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Leading and supporting the team to deliver strong performance through coordination.
  • Building and maintaining positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Job description

Middlemount Coal Mine is located approximately 90 kilometres north-east of Emerald and some 7 kilometres west of the township of Middlemount in Queensland’s Bowen Basin.

Middlemount Coal Mine is an open-cut coal mine which uses conventional truck and excavator methods. Middlemount commenced its full-scale operations in November 2011, producing approximately 4Mtpa of coking and PCI coal for export. Middlemount coal mine has a life expectancy estimated to be more than 30 years.

Middlemount Coal Pty Ltd (MCPL) is an incorporated joint venture between Peabody Energy Australia Pty Ltd and Yancoal Australia Ltd.

About the Role

Reporting to the Health Safety Superintendent you will be a results-oriented person with excellent communication skills who will enthusiastically accept the many challenges of this diverse and rewarding role.

You will have strong demonstrated skills in incident investigations, risk management and assessment processes, implementing and monitoring of initiatives and programs and adherence to statutory obligations. The diversity of this roll with also see you liaising with medical professionals and service providers to ensure compliance with the Safety and Health Management System and legislative requirements, monitoring the rehabilitation process for injured workers.

This role is a 12 Month Fixed Term Full Time position.
Your Responsibilities:

  • Delivering business objectives in a cost-effective and safe manner.
  • Overseeing the planning and allocation of task activities to achieve forecasted results, including health, safety, environment, and community impact considerations.
  • Assisting in the preparation of operational budgets and ensuring effective resource utilisation and cost control.
  • Developing and implementing standards, procedures, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Proactive leading and supporting the team to deliver strong performance through effective coordination.
  • Building and maintaining positive working relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
About You
  • Prior experience in a Health & Safety role, preferably within the resources/mining industry.
  • Experience with Injury Management / Workplace Rehabilitation and Return to Work programs.
  • Strong knowledge of Health & Safety Requirements on a mine site.
  • In-depth understanding of relevant legislation, including the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act and Regulations.
  • Qualifications in Occupational Health & Safety or Occupational Hygiene.
  • Demonstrated experience in Leading ICAM Investigations.
  • Strong Proactive leadership, communication, and stakeholder engagement capabilities.
