Job summary

Department of Justice and Community Safety VIC – Geelong VIC is seeking a Safety Coordinator to support the Safety and Assurance Manager in coordinating Occupational Health and Safety across Corrections Victoria, including implementing actions under A Safer Place to Work.

You will work with staff and external partners to promote safety, address hazards, develop and deliver safety management initiatives, and contribute to a safer workplace across Barwon Prison.

Qualifications

The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking a Safety Coordinator to provide a critical role at Barwon Prison.

About the Business Unit

HM Prison Barwon is a maximum-security prison located 6km north-west of Lara, 20km from the centre of Geelong and about 70km from Melbourne, and is part of the Barwon South West Regional structure. It is Victoria's major maximum-security prison for sentenced male prisoners. The prison officially opened in January 1990 and currently houses up to 416 men in custody, including high security, long term management, protection (including specialist protection), general mainstream (maximum security) and medium security prisoners.

About the Role

As the Safety Coordinator you will provide support to the Safety and Assurance Manager to partner with the operational teams by coordinating, supporting and monitoring Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) within Corrections including implementing actions related to A Safer Place to Work. The primary purpose of this role is to promote safety in a collaborative and informative manner. You will work alongside Corrections staff to educate them on all safety matters including occupational violence, slips trips and falls, manual handling and psychosocial hazards.

You will work collaboratively with a range of internal and external stakeholders to implement and drive the existing safety management system providing guidance and advice at the operational and tactical level to develop and deliver operational safety excellence in partnership with managers, supervisors, Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs) and staff to maximise the effectiveness of the safety management system.

The Safety Coordinator will work in partnership with a range of safety and wellbeing stakeholders under the leadership of the Safety Manager with a focus upon driving improved safety outcomes, through proactive preventative health and safety strategies, to address safety risks to Corrections workers.

Some of your duties will include:

• Contribute to the delivery of operational initiatives by working collaboratively with the Safety and Assurance Manager and key partners to ensure a consistent departmental and Corrections approach to the management of health, safety and wellbeing.
• Continuously build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
• Coordinate day to day safety support and action directed at process, systems and services to support Corrections Victoria to deliver a safe and healthy workplace for staff and to meet its responsibilities under health and safety laws.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

• Subject matter expert in occupational health and safety management systems with demonstrated business partnering experience to meet operational demand.
• Proven experience managing a diverse stakeholder group to deliver consistent and quality safety service.
• Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and experience in the application of OHS legislation, codes of practice and regulations.

Qualifications/requirements

• The relevant tertiary qualifications and/or demonstrated extensive experience in safety are desirable.
• A full and current driver's license is required due to the need to work across different locations.

The successful candidate will be required to undergo pre-employment checks which may include reference checks, nationally coordinated criminal history checks (NCCHC), and misconduct screening. Dependant on the role, other checks may include VicRoads checks, drivers licence checks, medical checks, Working with Children Checks, and Declaration of Private Interests (for executive and responsible officer roles).
