Job summary

Parks Victoria in the Gippsland Alps (Omeo) is seeking an experienced Ranger to plan for and deliver park services under the Ranger Team Leader. Duties include clearing 4WD tracks, maintaining visitor site amenities, supervising volunteers and monitoring flora and fauna.

The Omeo region offers a diverse landscape within Alpine National Park. Accredited Rangers may assist with fire and emergency response and planned burning.

Responsibilities

About the role

As a Ranger the primary focus of your position is to plan for, and deliver park services as directed by the Ranger Team Leader to enable efficient and effective public land management. The Omeo region and Gippsland Alps area encompasses a culturally and environmentally diverse landscape, including the Alpine National Park, and Ranger tasks are varied. Ranger duties include clearing 4WD tracks and brush cutting walking trails; cleaning and maintaining visitor site amenities; planning and supervising volunteer activities; controlling environmental weeds and pest animals; providing information for visitors; supervising junior ranger programs; undertaking flora and fauna monitoring; protecting ecologically sensitive areas. Accredited Rangers may also be deployed to assist with fire and emergency response and planned burning.

About the Team

Omeo Ranger team members are passionate about caring for some of Victoria's most significant natural and cultural landscapes. Our management area includes large parts of the Alpine and Snowy River National Parks, as well as numerous historic areas and other smaller public land reserves. We are a supportive, collaborative and high-performing team that takes pride in delivering quality outcomes for our parks, visitors, stakeholders and local communities. We work closely with Traditional Owners, volunteers, partner agencies, contractors and stakeholders to protect environmental values, enhance visitor experiences and maintain important park infrastructure. We're looking for someone with
  • Relevant qualifications and practical experience in environmental and natural resource management, conservation ecology and land management, outdoor recreation and education, flora and fauna management, or a related field.
  • Skills and experience using 4WD vehicles, plant and equipment (chainsaw, tractor, brush cutter, ride‑on mower, weed spray equipment, etc.).
  • Practical skills associated with maintaining and repairing public land assets (walking tracks, 4WD tracks, visitor site amenities, fences, gates, signage etc.).
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage positively with visitors, community and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both collaboratively as part of a team and autonomously, while contributing to a safe, respectful and inclusive workplace.
  • Sound problem‑solving skills, initiative, innovation and the ability to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • A current Victorian Driver Licence.
  • 4WD accreditation and experience.
  • Chainsaw Trim and Cross Cut accreditation and experience.
  • Ability to work outdoors in remote locations, including undertaking rostered weekend work when required.
