Job summary

Parks Victoria is seeking a Ranger to support visitor experiences and on-ground management within Pt Nepean National Park. You will maintain a range of assets including signage, tracks, lookouts, toilets, and furniture, ensuring safe passive recreation and environmental protection in coastal and remote areas.

The role requires physical fitness, initiative, and the ability to work independently within a supportive team, across varied weather and field conditions.

Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualifications in field management of park estate (environmental science, natural resource management, conservation or related).
  • Experience in on-ground asset maintenance and construction activities.
  • Licences/qualifications for minor plant operation (truck, tractor, ATV, etc.).
  • Ability to work autonomously with good initiative and strong organisational skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication with staff, visitors and stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Support delivery of Visitor Experiences and on-ground management of park assets (signage, tracks, boardwalks, toilets, facilities).
  • Maintain and monitor park facilities and assets for safety and functional standards.
  • Engage with staff and park visitors to promote safe passive recreation and environmental protection.
  • Work in varied weather and terrain, including semi-remote areas, with daily field duties.

Job description

As a Ranger, you are responsible for supporting the provision of Visitor Experiences and the delivery of on-ground management and maintenance of a wide range of built park assets including signage, walking tracks, boardwalks, lookouts, toilets, picnicking facilities and furniture, coastal access points, and associated minor assets within Pt Nepean National Park, ensuring that visitors safely enjoy passive recreation in natural areas, while also protecting the environment that makes the national park special.

You will demonstrate a strong personal work ethic, have good initiative and actively participate and contribute to a dynamic and supportive team.

This role is physically demanding and will often involve manual outdoor field duties carried out on a daily, weekly or regular basis in all weather conditions, and, sometimes in semi-remote areas. Candidates should have a reasonable level of fitness and health without significant medical issues or physical constraints that could prevent them from undertaking the inherent tasks of a field-based Ranger.

We’re looking for someone with:
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications for on-ground management of Parks Victoria estate, such as environmental science, natural resource management, conservation and land management, and / or, relevant outdoor industry technical skills in carpentry, landscaping, grounds maintenance, arboriculture or another related trade.
  • Experience and skills in on-ground built asset maintenance and construction activities, including the routine tracking and safety monitoring of park facilities and assets.
  • Experience and skills with small motorised equipment such as brush cutters, chainsaws, power tools and / or licences and qualifications for relevant minor plant operation, such as truck, tractor, ATV, chipper and small earthmoving machinery etc.
  • Demonstrated self-motivation and personal organisation, time management and ability to work autonomously and with initiative.
  • Good personal verbal and written communication skills and confidence to engage with other staff, park visitors and stakeholders.
