Job summary

Yamatji Marlpa Aboriginal Corporation (YMAC) invites applications for a full-time Ranger Coordinator based in Carnarvon. You will lead the Baiyungu-Yinnigurrura Ranger Group, directing on-Country environmental and cultural management activities and mentoring rangers toward competency and growth.

Qualifications

• Qualification(s) in Conservation and Land Management or related field (NRM or environmental studies), or relevant equivalent experience
• Demonstrated experience and confidence in working with Aboriginal communities and coordinating on-ground natural, cultural or agricultural resource management projects, preferably with Indigenous organisations and/or in arid and remote regions of Australia
• Experience in working independently with minimal supervision in a remote area and demonstrated capacity to remain focused, positive and organised in a challenging work environment (Desirable)
• Demonstrated experience in project administration and finance management (Desirable)
• Experience in developing funding proposals (Desirable)

Responsibilities

• Provide daily leadership, coordination and supervision of the Baiyungu-Yinnigurrura Ranger Group in their land and sea management duties, consistent with the Baiyungu-Yinnigurrura aspirations for Country
• Coordinate the design and implementation of the Baiyungu-Yinnigurrura ranger annual work plans for the protection and promotion of the natural and cultural heritage
• Support and develop the ranger group in their formal and on-the-job training activities
• Coordinate and manage the ranger group budget and fee for service opportunities to gradually ensure full time employment of all rangers on the team
• Integrate traditional ecological knowledge with modern land and sea management practice, for the long-term conservation and promotion of natural and cultural values identified by Nganhurra Thanardi Garrbu Aboriginal Corporation
• Liaise with existing and potential clients in delivering services in land and sea management; and
• Promote responsible work practices to ensure a healthy and safe work environment while on country

Yamatji Marlpa Aboriginal Corporation (YMAC) is the Native Title Representative Body (NTRB), delivering native title and other services across the Pilbara, Mid West, Murchison and Gascoyne regions of Western Australia. YMAC is run by a First Nations board of directors, representing several native title groups, each of whom have their own language, culture, traditions and protocols.

About the Role:

YMAC’s Research, Country and Culture Services (RC&CS) team provides Research, Heritage, Social Surrounds and Land & Sea Management services to PBC’s and Traditional Owners in the management of their Country and Culture. YMAC’s RC&CS is a skilled and coordinated team of archaeologists, anthropologists, environmental scientists, land and sea management specialists, ranger coordinators, managers and administrators who contribute to the ongoing empowerment of our clients – Aboriginal communities and organisations throughout Baiyungu-Yinnigurrura Country.

YMAC is currently seeking a full-time Ranger Coordinator (75 hours per fortnight) to be based in Carnarvon on a fixed-term contract.

The Ranger Coordinator will be employed by YMAC and work closely with the Baiyungu-Yinnigurrura Community, providing leadership and coordination for the Baiyungu-Yinnigurrura Ranger Program. The primary purpose of the role is to provide direction, supervision and leadership to a team of Baiyungu-Yinnigurrura Rangers undertaking on-Country environmental and cultural land management activities. The role includes mentoring and coaching Rangers to build skills and confidence, supporting day-to-day program delivery, and coordinating training activities with approved training providers to ensure Rangers are supported to achieve required competencies and outcomes.

About You:

The ideal candidate will have experience in a similar role, an understanding of cultural sensitivities, excellent communication skills (written and verbal) along with strong organisational and time management skills.

Your position responsibilities will include but will not be limited to:

• Liaise with existing and potential clients (Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, Federal Department, pastoral stations, resource companies, etc.) in delivering services in land and sea management; and
• Promote responsible work practices to ensure a healthy and safe work environment while on country
