Job summary

Strategic Partners Australia is seeking a Radio Frequency (RF) Field Technician to support urgent government network upgrades in Canberra. This role is an onsite, 5-days-per-week position under a 3-year contract (12 months initial with potential 24 months extension), requiring NV2 security clearance or above.

You will contribute to RF and satellite solutions, perform setup, calibration and testing, and assist with design, deployment and troubleshooting across dispersed locations.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience (5+ years) in radio communication engineering.
  • Strong understanding of RF and microwave communication systems, including design, testing and optimisation.
  • Ability to produce high-quality technical documentation, including high-level designs and maintenance plans.
  • Willingness to travel regularly to geographically dispersed posts and remote locations as required for deployments and support.

Responsibilities

  • Provide input and assist with identification, development, installation and modification of RF and satellite solutions.
  • Assist with fault resolution, requirement gathering, capability and solution design, installation and integration of RF solutions.
  • Design, set up, calibrate and test RF devices and software following maintenance schedules and using test equipment.
  • Integrate hardware/firmware modifications and support system deployments and configurations.
  • Support fault/ performance indications and escalate as required.
  • Investigate and resolve system-wide fault conditions using diagnostic tools.
  • Reconfigure equipment to address temporary outages and support equipment upgrades.
  • Review RF standards and regulations relevant to the project.
  • Monitor system performance and recommend equipment changes and maintenance procedures.
  • Develop and configure antennas, readers and transmitters and support global deployments.
  • Adhere to safety, security and quality standards.

Overview

The Telecommunications and Data Centre Support Section within the Infrastructure and Operational Support Branch of department's Information Management and Technology Division has a requirement for an ICT labour hire resource to fill the role of Radio Frequency (RF) Field Technician to support the Emergency Communications Network project (ECN) which involves the upgrade of legacy radio networks at Posts to ensure emergency communications are reliable and fit for purpose.

Key duties and responsibilities
  • Providing input and assisting with the identification, development, installation and modification of radio frequency (RF) and satellite solutions for department global capability.
  • Assisting with fault resolution, requirement gathering, capability and solution design, installation and integration of RF solutions.
  • Scoping, design, set up, tuning/ calibration and functional checks of RF devices and software, following maintenance schedules and using appropriate tools and test equipment.
  • Integrating hardware/ firmware modifications, implement communication systems and elements in accordance with standards.
  • Support of fault/ performance indications and fault resolution and/or escalates according to given procedures.
  • Investigating and resolving system-wide fault conditions using a wide range of diagnostic tools and techniques.
  • Reconfiguring equipment to circumvent temporary outages.
  • Specifying and supporting the selection and integration of RF devices in systems.
  • Providing support in internal communication and assisting with the reconfiguration of devices and software to optimise performance.
  • Monitoring system performance, recommend equipment modifications, upgrades and changes to operating procedures, service maintenance methods and schedules.
  • Assisting with equipment upgrades and modifications and approvals.
  • Reviewing industry and technology advancements, national standards, relevant RF protocols and regulations.
  • Measuring and evaluating the effectiveness of operational solutions, devices and software.
Other activities may include, but not limited to:
  • Evaluating and selecting devices and software.
  • Integrating radio frequency (RF) sub-systems into larger systems.
  • Calibrating, tuning and maintaining devices and software.
  • Deployment and installation of systems globally.
  • Developing, integrating and configuring antennas, readers and transmitters.
  • Adhering to established safety, security and quality standards.
Essential Criteria
  • Demonstrated experience (5+ years) in radio communication engineering.
  • Strong understanding of RF and microwave communication systems, including design, testing an optimisation.

Desirable Criteria
  • Experience supporting government satellite communication projects and Australian Embassies or other Australian sites overseas.
  • Ability to mentor or provide technical guidance to junior engineers or field technicians.
