Job summary

Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM) in Decatur, IL, is seeking a Scientist (II) for Small Scale Fermentation – Proteins. You will execute bench-scale fermentation experiments, manage media prep, inoculations, sampling, and data recording to support early-stage bioprocess development.

The role focuses on lab-scale fermentation with benchtop bioreactors, strain evaluations, safety awareness, and collaboration with cross-functional teams to optimize processes and enable tech transfer.

Qualifications

• MSc or BSc with 3-5 years of relevant microbiology/fermentation experience.
• Experience with lab-scale fermentation of bacteria, yeast or fungi.
• Hands-on with benchtop fermentation equipment and SOPs.

Responsibilities

• Execute fermentation experiments with bench-scale fermenters and manage media prep, inoculations, sampling and data organization.
• Prepare samples for downstream analysis and maintain lab documentation.
• Perform routine maintenance of fermentation and analytical equipment and support safety protocols.
• Develop fermentation protocols and generate SOPs/JSAs; contribute to continuous improvement.
• Document work in electronic lab notebook; assist with tech transfer discussions.
• Occasional weekend/evening work; ability to lift 50 lbs.
