Job description

Deliver Projects. Build Relationships. Take Ownership.

Our client is a growing construction business delivering projects across civil infrastructure, telecommunications, energy and electrical sectors.

  • Tertiary qualifications not required - practical knowledge and capability is!
  • Ideal for someone with learned experience and capability who wants exposure to commercial and client management
  • Bring your leadership capability and grow in this role!

As their Civil division continues to grow, they have asked us to support them in finding a Project Manager who knows construction, understands what it takes to deliver work on the ground and is ready to take genuine ownership of projects from start to finish.

You might be an experienced Project Manager already. Or you could have started your career on the tools, progressed through supervision or site leadership, and developed the capability to take that next step into project and commercial management.

The Opportunity

Working closely with our Operations Managers, Site Supervisors, Project Accountant, WHSEQ team and field crews, you'll take responsibility for the successful delivery of a portfolio of civil projects across the energy and electrical sectors.

In this hands on role, you'll be responsible for:

  • Taking projects from mobilisation through delivery, completion and handover
  • Planning and coordinating people, plant, materials, subcontractors and project programmes
  • Working closely with Supervisors and field crews to keep projects moving safely and efficiently
  • Building strong client relationships and managing expectations throughout delivery
  • Staying across project commercials including budgets, forecasting, claims, costs, variations and margins
  • Identifying risks, issues and potential delays early and taking ownership of practical solutions
  • Maintaining strong project governance across WHSEQ, quality, documentation and project close-out

You'll have support around you, but you'll also have the autonomy to make decisions, solve problems and take responsibility for your projects.

About You

We're less interested in what qualifications sit on your wall and more interested in what you can do. You'll bring solid experience within civil construction and a strong understanding of how projects actually come together on site through learned experience.

The must haves:

  • Understand civil construction (experience with formwork, suspended slabs, concreting) and can confidently work with crews, subcontractors and clients
  • Practical experience, capability and the right attitude - this is more critical than any qualifications you may or may not hold
  • Have strong leadership skills and are comfortable taking responsibility when things don't go according to plan
  • Strong communicator with capacity to build relationships with site teams, office-based teams and external stakeholders (clients)
  • While you don't need to be the technical expert on the ground, you need to understand the challenges and build credibility with the team in order to succeed together!
  • Be a natural proactive problem solver - with the ability to plan, coordinate resources and keep momentum going forward
  • Have commercial awareness or a genuine interest in developing further across budgets, forecasting, claims and variations

Highly Regarded:

  • Experience with Simpro or similar project management systems (not essential)
  • Experience in a similar role in a civil construction business (concreting, formwork)
Why this role?
  • You'll be close enough to the tools and the site without getting swallowed up by bureaucracy.
  • Our client's structure is contingent on Project Managers working closely with operational leaders, so your impact and opinion will be valued!
  • Flexible work practices - up to 2 days WFH once you're settled and have found your feet
  • A rare opportunity where the door isn't closed on you due to not having the right pieces of paper with your name on them!

As an equal opportunity employer, we are committed to building inclusive and respectful workplaces, strengthened by diversity and encourage applications from First Nations Peoples, all genders, those from culturally diverse backgrounds, LGBTIQA+ community and people with disability, of all ages and backgrounds. We strive to provide a barrier free and equitable recruitment experience.
