Job description

Procurement Officer – Construction & Property Purchasing

Know what a building job should cost? Comfortable telling a supplier their price isn’t good enough, and being the person every purchase has to go through? We want to hear from you

About us

Don Hodge Group is a family-owned conglomerate with seven hotels across Sydney, Lake Macquarie and Forbes, and more than 30 industrial and commercial properties. We have a steady pipeline of construction work, led by the full rebuild of the Forbes Inn Hotel, alongside refurbishment and fit-out projects across our hotels and properties.

The role

This role is the single point of control for all purchasing across our hotels and our industrial and commercial properties: construction, building, maintenance and anything non-standard. Venues and staff don't buy these items direct – they come to you.

At least half your time will be construction purchasing for our capital projects, starting with the Forbes Inn rebuild. The rest is maintenance and non-standard purchasing across our hotels and properties: you negotiate the deals, then either place the order or point staff to the right supplier at the agreed price.

This is a hands-on role with no direct reports. Alongside the construction work, your days will include getting quotes, placing orders, checking invoices and fielding requests from the venues.

Standard day-to-day business purchases, such as alcohol and food for the hotels, are excluded and stay with the venues.

What you’ll do
Construction projects (at least 50% of the role)
  • Run purchasing for the Forbes Inn rebuild and our other capital works, refurbishments and fit-outs.

  • Source and price owner-supplied items such as finishes, tiles, furniture, signage, AV and equipment, and time deliveries to suit the build program.

  • Work with our builders, architects, engineers and project managers to price trade packages and materials.

  • Obtain and benchmark quotes, review variations and challenge pricing that doesn’t stack up.

  • Check builder claims, contractor invoices and pass-through costs against contracts, quotes and agreed rates before they’re approved.

  • Track committed spend against each project budget.

Hotels, properties and maintenance
  • Be the first point of contact for venue managers, chefs and maintenance staff on any building, maintenance or non-standard purchase.

  • Negotiate group-wide supply agreements and preferred trade rates, consolidating suppliers where it makes sense.

  • Set up approved supplier accounts and price books so staff can order routine items themselves at the agreed price.

  • Place orders for anything non-standard, or point staff to the right supplier and rate.

  • Turn requests around quickly so purchasing never holds a venue up.

Purchasing controls
  • Run a simple, enforced process: quotes above set thresholds, a purchase order before anything is bought, and invoices matched to the order before payment.

  • Work with our financial controller on approvals, supplier accounts and cost tracking.

  • Make sure contractors hold current licences, insurance and WHS documentation before they start.

  • Report spend and savings to the CEO each month.

What you’ll bring
  • Procurement, purchasing, estimating or commercial experience in construction, building, fit-out or property maintenance.

  • Strong working knowledge of construction materials, trades, subcontractor pricing and project costs – you know what things should cost.

  • Experience pricing trade packages, assessing variations and checking progress claims.

  • A track record of negotiating supplier and contractor agreements that delivered measurable savings.

  • Experience building price books, schedules of rates and supplier agreements.

  • The confidence to say no and hold suppliers, contractors and our own staff to the process, while staying easy to deal with.

  • Strong organisation and attention to detail across several projects and properties at once.

  • Hospitality or hotel experience is a bonus, not a requirement.

What’s on offer
  • Reporting directly to the CEO, with real authority over how the group buys.

  • A major regional hotel rebuild and an ongoing pipeline of capital works.
