AFH is proudly owned by Torishima Pump, a globally recognized Japanese company specializing in the design and manufacture of centrifugal pumps and fluid handling systems. Serving the power generation, desalination, oil & gas, and water infrastructure markets. Being part of Torishima group strengthens our ability to deliver world-class solutions to the Australian market.

Role Overview

We are seeking a Process Engineer to join our growing engineering team in Melbourne.

This is a practical, hands-on engineering role with a strong focus on the design, development and proposal of mechanical and process packages, including pump skids, compressor packages and chemical injection systems.

The role will suit an engineer who has a good understanding of mechanical equipment and process systems and is interested in developing their capabilities across process engineering, mechanical design, equipment selection, costing and tendering.

You will work closely with our sales, tendering, project and engineering teams, as well as suppliers, OEMs, consultants and end users.

The successful candidate does not need to be an advanced process engineer. However, you should be comfortable reviewing process requirements, developing basic P&IDs, understanding equipment selection and developing practical engineering solutions.

Key Responsibilities
1. Process & Mechanical Engineering
  • Select pumps, compressors and associated mechanical equipment based on process requirements and operating conditions.
  • Develop and review P&IDs, process flow diagrams and equipment layouts for packaged systems.
  • Develop process and mechanical solutions for pump skids, compressor packages, chemical injection packages and other fluid handling systems.
  • Review customer specifications, datasheets, P&IDs, equipment schedules and other technical documentation.
  • Develop basic process calculations and equipment sizing where required.
  • Identify technical requirements, interfaces, deviations and potential design risks.
  • Work with suppliers and OEMs to develop technically compliant and commercially competitive solutions.
2. Mechanical Design & Package Engineering
  • Review equipment arrangement, piping, valves, instruments and mechanical interfaces.
  • Prepare and review technical documentation, datasheets, equipment schedules and engineering drawings.
  • Coordinate with drafting and engineering team to develop practical package designs.
  • Assist with design reviews and technical discussions with customers and suppliers.
  • Review customer enquiries and develop the scope of supply and work.
  • Prepare equipment selections and technical inputs for budgetary and firm quotations.
  • Obtain and evaluate supplier/OEM quotations, pricing, technical information and lead times.
  • Develop equipment and package cost estimates and pricing.
  • Review supplier quotations to identify technical and commercial gaps.
  • Prepare technical clarifications, deviations and exclusions.
  • Developing competitive technical and commercial proposals.
  • Participate in customer clarification meetings and technical discussions.
  • Provide engineering support during project execution and assist with the transition from tender to project delivery.
  • Review vendor drawings and documentation and coordinate technical queries with suppliers.
  • Assist Project Managers with technical issues, design reviews and customer comments.
  • Coordinate with procurement, suppliers, drafting and project teams to ensure the equipment is delivered in accordance with the project requirements.
  • Assist with commissioning and technical support when required.
5. Standards & Technical Compliance
  • Ensure proposed designs and equipment comply with customer specifications, applicable Australian Standards and relevant international standards.
  • Knowledge of API 610, 617, API 675, 682 and API 685 is highly regarded.
  • Compliance Verification: Ensure proposed equipment, designs, datasheets, and technical solutions comply with customer specifications, applicable standards, and company requirements.
  • Risk Identification: Identify technical risks, specification gaps, deviations and potential project issues during the application and proposal stage and escalated them appropriately.
  • Quality Assurance: Maintain a high standard of accuracy and quality across all technical submissions, quotations, calculations, and customer documentation.
  • Continuous Improvement: Contribute to improving application engineering processes, technical standards, templates, and lessons learned.
  • IMS Compliance: Participate in Integrated Management System (IMS) activities, audits, procedures, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Ideally 3-7 years' experience in engineering, process engineering, mechanical design or a related role.
  • Experience with pumps, compressors, piping systems or packaged equipment.
  • Ability to understand and develop P&IDs and process systems.
  • Good understanding of mechanical equipment and basic process engineering principles.
  • Experience with equipment selection, mechanical design and technical documentation.
  • Understanding of engineering costing, supplier quotations and pricing.
  • Some experience in project engineering or equipment/package delivery.
  • Experience in mining, oil & gas, chemical processing or related industries is advantageous.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with customers, suppliers and internal teams.
  • Ability to work independently while also collaborating with a multidisciplinary team.
What We Offer
  • Opportunity to develop skills across process engineering, mechanical design, estimating and project engineering.
  • Work with an experienced team and internationally recognised OEMs.
