Job summary

Queensland Government's Youth Justice is seeking a Principal Practice Officer to deliver practice support and development for Regional Operations. You will apply expert knowledge of court procedures and legislation to improve service delivery.

In this role you will lead major projects, analyse cross‑functional processes, liaise with internal teams and stakeholders, and provide high‑level policy advice to the Manager and Director on youth justice programs and risk‑needs‑responsivity principles.

Job description

The role of Principal Practice Officer provides expertise in the delivery of the practice support and practice development functions of Youth Justice Regional Operations. Specifically, this role requires high quality specialist knowledge regarding court, interpretation of legislation and awareness and understanding of relevant Acts. The Principal Practice Officers draw from the strategic driver behind their work, sound research, their experience delivering and leading service delivery functions, and recognised evidence-based best practice.

As Principal Practice Officer, You Will Specifically

• Support and enhance the capabilities of court coordinators by providing advice and guidance on interpreting and implementing legislation in practice.
• Demonstrate cultural capability and/or a commitment to developing cultural capability to ensure an inclusive culture that aligns with the Human Rights Act 2019 and supports departmental programs and community partnerships aimed at preserving cultural connections for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
• Identify, research, and analyse complex operational and practice issues and lead the development and implementation of evidence based operational policy and practice solutions specific youth justice issues
• Prepare high level advice on current practice, relevant operational policy/procedure implications, legislation and programs and the preparation of a range of written material including cabinet submissions, executive correspondence, briefing material and information papers in relation to youth justice service delivery and the courts.
• Lead, coordinate, plan, implement and monitor progress of major projects within tight timeframes to achieve desired outcomes.
• Analyse, design, and optimise business processes to improve efficiency, effectiveness, and alignment with organisational objectives, ensuring compliance with relevant policies and standards.
• Liaise and consult with other teams and with various other areas within the Department to identify practice issues and to develop strategic and operational solutions.
• Ensure projects, practice improvement and program development support the department's service delivery and strategic intent, including relevant outcomes for First Nations peoples
• Represent and negotiate on behalf of the organisation in external and internal discussions and relevant working groups about the development of practice initiatives and projects that enhance and develop current practices in relation to Risk, Needs and Responsivity principles and evidence based practice.
• Provide high level expert advice and information to the Manager and respective Director and other key stakeholders pertaining to complex Youth Justice Service delivery issues and trends and presenting information for service delivery consideration.
• Work within a team environment to coordinate the activities of team members, and if necessary as a team leader, and contribute to the promotion of an accountable and equitable work environment as delegated by the Manager.
