Job summary

Mott MacDonald’s Defence Division in Adelaide seeks a Principal Safety Case Engineer to lead complex nuclear safety cases for Australia’s sovereign programme. You will provide technical assurance, mentor specialists, and engage with clients and regulators in a highly regulated environment.

Qualifications

  • Degree in engineering, physics or STEM field.
  • Significant nuclear safety case or safety assurance experience.

Due to strong growth and an exciting pipeline of projects, Mott MacDonald's Defence Division in Adelaide has an exciting opening for a Principal Safety Case Engineer to support the delivery of complex naval nuclear programme. As a Principal Nuclear Safety Case Engineer, you will provide technical leadership across complex, high-profile projects supporting Australia's sovereign defence capability. Working alongside leading specialists from Australia, the UK and across our global business, you will influence safety outcomes, mentor future leaders and help establish the foundations of Australia's evolving nuclear industry. In this position you will:

  • Lead the development and delivery of complex nuclear safety cases.
  • Provide technical assurance and strategic guidance across major programmes.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to clients and regulators.
  • Lead multidisciplinary teams and mentor emerging safety professionals.
  • Contribute to business growth, capability development and recruitment within our expanding nuclear practice.
  • Support the development of Australia's sovereign nuclear engineering capability.

Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Nuclear safety case development and substantiation
  • Deterministic and Probabilistic Safety Assessment
  • Regulatory engagement and licensing activities
  • Design change and modification safety assessments
  • ALARP and risk assessment studies
  • Decommissioning and lifecycle safety management
  • Functional safety and engineering substantiation
  • Hazard identification and risk studies (HAZOP, HAZAN and related techniques)
  • Nuclear fire and criticality assessment
About You
  • A degree in engineering, physics or another relevant STEM discipline.
  • Significant experience delivering nuclear safety case or safety assurance activities.
  • Experience within nuclear, defence or other high-hazard regulated industries.
  • Chartered status (or strong progress toward chartership).
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills and the ability to influence technical decisions.
  • A passion for developing others through coaching and mentoring.
  • The ability to work within highly regulated and complex delivery environments.

Due to the nature of our defence projects, successful applicants will be required to obtain and maintain an appropriate security clearance (Australian NV1 or UK SC/DV equivalent). We will support suitable candidates through the clearance process where required.
