Job description

Title

Nuclear Safety Case Engineer

Opportunity

KBR Infrastructure Solutions Australia, in partnership with Frazer-Nash Consultancy, is seeking experienced Nuclear Safety Case Engineers to join Australia's largest industry team of Nuclear Suitably Qualified and Experienced Personnel (NSQEP). This is a rare opportunity to work at the forefront of one of the most strategically significant engineering programmes in Australia's history. Under AUKUS Pillar 1, Australia is on a defined path to acquiring and operating a fleet of conventionally armed, Nuclear-Powered Submarines (NPS). Delivering that capability safely and on schedule demands world‑class nuclear safety expertise and that is precisely what our team provides. You will work directly alongside government and defence stakeholders to deliver nuclear safety informed design processes for naval nuclear facilities and infrastructure across Australia. The work is technically demanding, nationally critical, and professionally rewarding in equal measure. Our team has been intentionally built and now represents the deepest concentration of nuclear safety expertise in Australian industry. You would be joining and shaping that capability at a defining moment in its growth.

What You Will Do
  • Lead and contribute to nuclear safety cases for complex naval nuclear infrastructure
  • Apply deterministic safety analysis methodologies to generate safety requirements and inform the design process
  • Engage with licensing and regulatory frameworks governing nuclear‑powered naval operations
  • Produce and review technical design substantiation documentation to the standard demanded by nuclear regulation
  • Mentor and develop the next generation of Australian NSQEP
What We Offer
  • Structured development: invested in building genuine internal training and mentoring capability, supporting transition into the nuclear domain for candidates from high‑hazard regulated industries.
  • Scale and variety: projects spanning Canberra, Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane, with geographic flexibility and access to a nationally connected, highly experienced team.
  • Significance: role that directly enables Australia's sovereign nuclear submarine capability.
Essential — What We Are Looking For
  • Established experience across the following disciplines: safety‑informed design process, deterministic safety analysis, regulation and licensing, technical design substantiation.
  • Engineering degree or equivalent relevant qualification.
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain an Australian Defence security clearance.
Desirable
  • Experience in high‑hazard industries operating under formal regulatory regimes.
  • Direct experience with nuclear‑powered submarine programmes.
  • Involvement in the delivery of nuclear facilities or infrastructure.
  • Background in Defence project delivery.
A Note to Career‑Changers

If you have spent your career in a regulated, high‑hazard environment – and have the analytical rigour, safety discipline, and professional credibility that entails – we want to hear from you. Nuclear safety expertise is built, not simply recruited. We have the capability to develop the right people, and we actively encourage applications from those ready to make that transition.

Benefits
  • Industry leading salaries reviewed annually.
  • 20 days of annual leave per year + the ability to accrue an additional 8 hours every 4 weeks (33 days in total).
  • Flexible work arrangements (start/finish times, WFH, flex time).
  • Salary packaging and novated leases.
  • Paid professional membership fees.
  • Life/Health insurance discounts.
  • Employee stock purchase plans.
  • Personal career development plans.
  • Growth and promotion opportunities.
  • Great office environment with fantastic facilities.
  • Access to health benefits programs.
