Job summary

Argo Natural Resources in Brisbane seeks a Principal Mining Engineer - Strategic Planning to drive long-term open cut and underground planning. You will lead models, schedules and economic evaluations that shape the Life of Mine plan, corporate forecasts and major investment decisions.

Principal Mining Engineer - Strategic Planning

ABOUT THIS OPPORTUNITY

As the Principal Mining Engineer - Strategic Planning, you'll sit at the heart of Argo's long-term strategy, turning complex open cut and underground mining opportunities into integrated, commercially compelling plans. You'll lead the models, schedules and economic evaluations that shape our Life of Mine plan, corporate forecasts, growth projects and major investment decisions - giving you a direct line of sight from technical strategy to business outcomes.

With Argo's open cut portfolio growing alongside its established underground operations, you'll bring strong strategic planning expertise while integrating multiple mining methods into one complex enterprise-wide plan. You'll build the frameworks and systems that enable smarter planning, stronger decision-making and better business intelligence - creating the foundation for how Argo plans, invests and grows into the future.

ABOUT YOU

• Degree in Mining Engineering.
• 10+ years' experience in coal mining, with substantial strategic and long-term open cut planning experience.
• Working knowledge of underground coal mining methods and strategic planning.
• Advanced proficiency in open cut mine design and scheduling software, such as Deswik, XPAC, Spry or equivalent.
• Proven experience developing integrated Life of Mine models, from physical production plans through to cash flow and NPV.
• Strong understanding of open cut mine design, sequencing and scheduling, including multi-seam truck and shovel operations.
• Experience incorporating geotechnical, gas, ventilation, tenure and regulatory constraints into mine plans.
• Experience providing JORC Reserve estimation inputs, including modifying factors, recovery, dilution and mine optimisation.
• Strong commercial acumen, with the ability to evaluate mining methods, trade-offs, scenarios and growth opportunities.
• Experience supporting growth studies, stage-gate reviews, investment decisions and M&A assessments.
• Strong understanding of planning standards, QA/QC, model governance, version control and technical assurance.
• Experience developing or improving mining performance, KPI and business intelligence frameworks.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving capability, with the ability to turn complex technical information into clear strategic insights.
• Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across site, technical, corporate and commercial teams.
• A strategic, collaborative and continuous-improvement mindset, with a focus on building robust systems and capability that support long-term business performance.
